“Color and Light: Application to the Landscape” with Larry Blovits

Larry Blovits has amassed a national reputation for excellence in painting oil and pastel portraits, landscapes, - and teaching. Receiving numerous awards and honors in national shows ever since 1962, Larry has also achieved signature status in many prestigious national art organizations around the country. New York City’s Pastel Society of America bestowed the honor of “Master Pastelist” on Larry in 1996.
This workshop is open to beginners through advanced, with the medium being either pastel or oil. Suggested material list provided. The illuminating light characteristics effect how the artist perceives colors in the landscape. The next step is to mix the appropriate hue and intensity to match the light characteristic’s effect on the color. Recognizing and mixing the correct hue, or combination there of, and combining that with a particular light source enables the artist to create a powerful and beautiful statement. Participants will be assigned to produce the first development stages of one or two landscapes before the workshop so that painting time during the workshop can be maximized. There will be demonstrations and lectures on related techniques and procedures throughout the workshop, as well as personal attention. Painting time will be divided between working inside using photographs as a source, and directly from nature (weather permitting).
Clay Tiles withg Cara O’Brien

West Michigan artist, Cara O’Brien, is known for her colorful clay tiles and jewelry. Come and join Cara in a tile making adventure. These hand crafted tiles are made using a slip trail technique. Color is added with rich glazes. The same technique is used to create unique pendants, earrings or pins. Use the finished tiles to add personality to your home and wear the jewelry to add personality to your style. You do not want to miss this opportunity.
Jewelers Bench: Stunning in Silver with Cristine Grimm

If you have seen Cristine’s jewelry in the NCCA-Artsplace gallery then you will want to join her in exploring Art Clay, the clay that turns to 99.9% pure silver when fired. Participant will start out small, making small charms or a small pendant with basic techniques that can be used anywhere, anytime, without a kiln. Cristine Grimm, a certified Art Clay instructor, will bring all the tools and tricks necessary to create something you’ll enjoy wearing or adding to your next beading project. Cost includes 10g of silver clay, the use of all necessary tools, and a necklace and jump ring for wearing your jewelry out the door.
Colored Pencil Workshop with Anita Sams

Colored pencils in the hands of an artist can produce brilliant results. Come and learn colored pencil techniques from experienced artist Anita Sams. In the first session participants will learn and practice pencil techniques - color layering, blending, burnishing, highlighting, etc. During the second session students will receive instruction in rendering a colorful floral drawing of a poppy.
Art Around the World: A Workshop for Teachers and Parents with Kris Vredeveld

This class is designed to introduce teachers and parents to a variety of art projects that reflect cultures from around the world. From masks of Africa to Japanese fans participants will create hands-on samples for classrooms or home projects. Take the children you teach on an adventure through the continents. Also included will be a booklet filled with resources and additional project ideas. **Note: NCCA Youth Arts Month Theme for 2011 is “Art Around the World”.
Photoshop Elements with Richard Hinton

This class introduces the participant to the workings of Photoshop Elements and assumes basic knowledge of computers and digital photography. Features of elements including file management, editing, printing, and filters will be discussed along with outlines and demonstrations. Glass on Glass Mosaic Vase/Candle Holder with Mary Anderson

Join glass artist Mary Anderson in making a glass on glass piece. Participants will learn to create a design from cut pieces of colorful stained glass and adhere it to a glass vase. Pieces will be grouted. The mosaic sends out a luminous glow when a candle is placed inside. Call a friend and take this class together. A perfect girl’s night project.

Drawing Techniques with Lance Moon

Matting and Framing Workshop with Lindsay Isenhart

Class Fee: $50 Ages 16-Adult
Learn the art of mat cutting for your own use or to prepare a gift for a special person. In this workshop you will learn about mat selection, how to properly measure, cut and mount your work, and assemble your frame. Each participant should bring an 8x10 piece of art or photograph (slightly smaller is fine) to frame. On the first night we will discuss materials, equipment, and mat selection. The second night we will cut mats and assemble frames. Materials provided.

Clay Tiles and Jewelry with Cara O’Brien - Class Fee $12.00
Fremont Mondays July 26 – Aug 9 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. Ages 13-18, August 9 class 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Students will work with West Michigan artist Cara O’Brien to hand build clay tiles, sketch design ideas and use slip trails to create their designs and then use Cara’s methods to glaze them. Students will look at examples of clay jewelry and discuss different types and styles, then create pendants, pins, or earrings using the same methods as they used for their tiles.

Students will begin by learning the basics of traditional black and white photography. They will spend the majority of this class learning about exposure including film speed, aperture, and shutter speed. They will have fun applying the concepts of design, light, texture, and good composition while capturing images around Fremont. Students will learn about the basics of printing from a 35mm black and white negative and then watch as their images magically appear in the developing tray.
Jewelry Sampler – Hollie Benson - Class Fee $15.00
Fremont July 27 - 30, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Tuesday - Friday Ages 12 - 18
Students will learn how to cut and arrange fusible glass including different dichroic samples and then learn the process of firing the kiln. Next they’ll learn to shape and polish stones to create beautiful pieces of jewelry. They will also make glass beads by wrapping hot glass around small mandrills using an open flame. Finally, students will make jewelry with their glass and stones by learning wire wrapping and stringing techniques.
Wood Carving – Walking Stick - Class Fee $12.00

Explore the world of wood carving! Learn how to choose the right type of wood for each job, and prepare that wood for carving. Learn about different cultural designs and uses for carving. Plan your design, properly transfer your plans and begin cutting designs away using a variety of carving tools. They will learn about choosing the right carving tool and properly maintaining those tools. Finally students will learn how to stain and finish their own unique carving stick.

This is a great class for the budding fashion designer! Projects completed in this class include altered jeans, shirts, hand painted silk scarves, appliquéed clothing and canvas tote bags. Designing and working with stamp making, fabric dyes, resist, painting on silk, and use of embroidery and applique will be used to create student’s unique fashions.
