Get a taste of the vast possibilities of working with clay. Learn the fundamental skills needed to throw on the potter’s wheel and to hand-build with clay. Throwing basics will be demonstrated and coached by a master potter in classes 1, 3, and 5, with studio time set aside for clay practice in classes 2 and 4. Students will be exposed to hand-building techniques such as coil, pinch, and slab methods of working with clay.

In this 3 week class students will learn to develop an under-painting, block in highlights and shadows, glaze layers and add finishing details using oil painting mediums. Students will be able to chose from several objects to develop two oil based still life paintings, 4” x 4” and 8” x 10”.

Use traditional shapes, proportions, and learn about the proper drainage and wiring holes needed to create your own Bonsai pot! Use pinch, coil and slab techniques with high fire clay to complete one miniature bonsai and one medium bonsai pot. Have your pots ready for exciting Bonsai classes to come in March and April led by members of the West Michigan Bonsai Club!

Inspired by the printmaking exhibit? Learn to create a metal plate by acid and dry point etching taught by artist Lee Ann Frame! These intaglio etching techniques of aqua tint, etching, open bite, and others will be taught. Students will develop a 4” x 6” plate and print multiple copies in this two day workshop. All tools and materials provided.

 

Stained Glass Basics

Stained Glass Basics
Thurs., March 2, 9, 16 and 23 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Ages 16+ $120 ($110 Members)
This program will be broken down into four days of learning.

Day 1 learn about stained glass patterns, how to find them, use them and create them. Learn about glass selection and how to best use your materials.

Day 2 is all about cutting! Learn to accurately cut a variety of glass using a variety of class cutters and grinders. You’ll be cutting out your glass pattern traced out on Day 1.

Day 3 is about finish fitting, and taping. Fine tune your fits using grinding and pinning, laid over your pattern, then get ready to tape!

Day 4 – finish taping, then learn to solder! Soldering is an art form of its own! Finally, add a patina, and polish up your stained glass with wax to show it off! Avg. 80 sq. inches.

Participants will learn about glass fusing and the use of frit, stringers, fusible glass and glass paint to create this wonderful gift in their student’s school colors! If you don’t have a graduate, leave off the cap and create a colorful fused glass picture frame for any occasion. Include materials for one easel backed fused glass 4”x6” photo frame.
