SUMMARY:Sue Brodbeck - Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Sue Brodbeck – Oil Painting\nAugust 26 – September 27\nRay & Phyllis Jansma Gallery \nat NCCA-Artsplace\n13 E. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022. \nSue Brodbeck is a Michigan native. Her teaching career took her and her husband to the Detroit metro area. They now split their time between Dearborn and the Straights of Mackinac where they summer in a log cabin in the woods which acts as inspiration for many of Sue’s paintings. Sue states\, “I enjoy travel throughout the United States where God’s natural world has always inspired me.” Love of waterfalls in the UP led Sue to many of the eastern states to enjoy many more waterfall locations. \nSue has been painting waterfalls for the past ten years. Most of her first paintings came from photographs she had taken. As a plein air artist\, Sue spent the last 5 years returning to Michigan waterfalls to paint them as she experiences them on location. Sue has been a professional artist since retiring from teaching childhood art education in the early 2000’s. She studied art formally at Henry Ford Community College\, Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center\, and Sea and Sky classes with Edward Duff. \nSue’s work is influences by the post impressionist movement\, using a palette knife to lay in her colors\, expressing movement and dynamic color combinations to capture rocks\, tress and water of her landscapes. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022. \nOur goal is to exhibit and acknowledge the finest photographers in the state of Michigan and encourage greater growth and achievement in the photographic community. This is a juried competition. Selected works will be exhibited and among them will be the honor of 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd place and honorable mentions receiving ribbons and cash award. \nThe 2025 Juror: Richard Hinton. Richard is a talented local photographer with a passion for capturing the essence of travel and the charm of the American roadside. His journey began in high school when he got his hands on his first 35mm camera\, sparking a lifelong love for photography. Over the years\, he has adapted to the ever-evolving art form\, sharing his expertise by teaching both after-school programs and adult classes through the Arts Place. A seasoned competitor\, Richard has earned recognition in numerous photography contests and recently stepped back from the art fair circuit after a successful run. He thrives in the creative possibilities of the “digital darkroom\,” taking pride in printing his own work. Main Street\, Fremont.\nElon Howe is a skilled craftsman who got his start as a WWII Bomber Mechanic. Elon Howe is also a building contractor\, a violin and mandolin builder\, a sawyer\, a frequent Guild of American Luthiers convention exhibitor\, and a founding member of the Michigan Violin Makers Association. \nThe stories he shares about how he learned his trade\, musicians who have played his instruments\, and the people who have influenced his life and his heart are a treasure in themselves. \nThis exhibit is a collection of stories\, photographs\, tools and instruments that define Elon’s Wood N Strings luthier studio. Main Street\, Fremont\, MI. \nThe dates for this years show are September 4 through October 5\, with a reception on September 14\, 10-Noon. \nWoodworkers who would like to participate can email me a photo of 1 to 3 of their pieces to be considered for the show. If you’ve been part of the show before – you’re a lock-in\, just send me a picture I can use for promotional purposes. I have room for about a dozen artists. Work can be for sale or for exhibit only. In regards to the technical aspects of photography I am self-taught. I learned the aesthetic values from my art experience\, and looking at what was considered good photography. To a great extent my approach to fine art photography has been influenced by my education in college\, majoring in studio art. I have been influenced by many artists and photographers too numerous to mention. At first I used 35mm & medium format film cameras\, but now all my images are captured with various digital cameras. I owned and operated a photography business for over 40 years engaging in wedding photography\, senior portraits\, family portraits\, underclass school day portraits\, yearbook publications and commercial product photography. More recently\, I have become involved in producing photographic fine art images. In addition to participating in local art shows and competitions within the last 20 years\, I have had images published in Popular Photography Magazine\, Canada’s PhotoLife Magazine\, B&W Magazine\, Focus Magazine\, Austria’s Trierenberg Super Circuit Publications\, Photographer’s Forum Best of Photography Annuals\, Black River Calendar Publishing and local publications. I have also licensed photographs for several book covers\, music CD covers\, including one for an Australian Blues Band\, even a background screen for a British Rock Group. I have also licensed a number of my images to be sold on products at the Hobby Lobby Stores and on fabric with Northcott Silk. Now\, in my supposedly retirement\, I keep busy with steady fine art photography online sales on several shop sites\, and am involved in local art & photography organizations\, most notably with Grand Valley Artists. \nEntry Guidelines \n• Must be Michigan resident\, 18 or older\, to submit work.\n• Work must be framed and ready to display or finished appropriately.\n• All photographic processes are accepted.\n• NCCA reserves the right to decline artwork for any reason.\n• Accepted work may be placed for sale during the exhibit.\n• A 30% commission is charged on all sales during exhibit.\n• Each eligible photographer may submit up to two photographs.\n• Entry labels must be firmly affixed to the back of the entries.\n• Please indicate the photographic process in your description. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022. \nThe 2024 Youth Art Exhibit was given the theme “Color Your World!” and showcases imagination and creativity! Teachers and parents of children from the Newaygo County area submitted artwork from school children Kindergarten through 6th grade. Selected entries along with 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place awards\, and honorable mentions\, will be on display in the Jansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace! \nWinning art will be on exhibit March 1 – 30 at NCCA-Artsplace. Award announcements will be posted by 5:00 p.m. on Friday\, March 1\, 2024 at www.ncca- artsplace.org and Facebook @NCCA-Artsplace. Each grade will be awarded 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd\, and at least two honorable mention prizes. Modern printmaking can involve silk screens\, aluminum plate\, and even heat presses. \nA wide variety of printmaking tools and equipment showing the processes will also be part of this dynamic exhibit. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022.\nFounded in 1946\, the Michigan Water Color Society mission is to promote a stronger awareness and interest in watercolor as well as advancement of the watercolor media as an art form\, through presentation\, workshops\, juried shows and artist networking. Their aim was to further watercolor education\, maintain high standards artistically\, while based on the premise of integrity and professionalism\, and to be a forum open to all points of view. The annual travel show includes 30 award winning paintings selected by the MWCS to tour the state of Michigan. She has exhibited in local and regional competitions and her works are included in the collections of Governor Blanchard\, Governor Engler\, and James Brooks. \nHer art has won awards in the Michigan Fine Arts Competition in Birmingham/Bloomfield\, the Mid-Michigan Competition in St. Joseph\, the Western Michigan Competition in Holland\, the Small Wonders Competition in Lansing\, and numerous others. She is a published artist with over two hundred illustrations in books and magazines. \nThis exhibit is a gathering of fifty-some works represent years of crafting fine paintings; including still life\, figurative\, humorous\, and animal subjects. Raelynn grew up in Williamston\, MI and was heavily involved in the arts\, theatre\, and soccer as a young girl. She graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in Visual Arts Education now currently teaching at Muskegon High School. She currently lives and works in Muskegon\, MI with her partner James. Raelynn has taught high school students for four years about various mediums such as digital art\, digital photography\, ceramics\, drawing\, and painting. Her artwork focuses on the intricacies of tiny moving parts of the natural world. Cathy studied at Aquinas College and is currently the organizer of the Big Rapids Camera Club. She has utilized photography for 35 years as a food safety inspector with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development\, using evidence photographs to build a strong case for enforcement\, requiring good focus\, proper exposure\, and composition. In 2018 she began using a mirrorless digital camera for the first time and fell in love with photography as a\, art-form rather than a career tool. Cathy primarily shoots landscapes and wildlife but also enjoys travel and cityscape/urban photography.
