DESCRIPTION:Block Print – “Patchwork Printmaking” \nwith Cheryl Gould\nSat.\, April 22 and 29 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. .\nAges 16+ $65 ($60 Members)\nYou’ll find a great example of reduction block printing in “Feathered Friends” block print by Cheryl Gould. Chryl will guide students through a two-step block print\, with rainbow inking rolls to include more color variation. Participants should come prepared with an idea\, sketches or reference pictures for their block. Possibilities might include butterflies\, leaves\, birds\, flowers\, coffee cups\, quilt blocks\, but anything that could be fit into a square would work. Designs will be carved into a 4” by 4” block\, and printed individually and grouped into 4 block by 4 block designs. Participants can also collaborate with each other! The first day introduce reduction block printing\, then participants will draw and carve the block\, grid up the paper\, and complete the first layer of printing. DESCRIPTION:NCCA-Artsplace Exhibit\nPaintings by Mary Sundstrom\nMarch 29 – April 29\nReception April 22\,10:00 a.m. – Noon\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\nMary Sundstrom is a West Michigan painter\, illustrator\, jeweler and sculptor\, influenced by the natural world of the region. As a naturalist\, she is fascinated by creatures\, fungi and plants living among the bayous surrounding the Grand River near where she lives. Her playful oil paintings represent what she sees in the landscape mixed with her own perceptions. When Mary is not creating she is traveling with her husband Randy or working at the Holland Area Arts Council where she designs and curates exhibitions and public art projects. \n“Pattern” is the word that plays through my mind as I sketch small thumbnails that turn into oil paintings. My favorite subject matter are the plants\, objects and reflected shapes of the water and sky. I also appreciate a wet and muddy pondside or unsung weeds. I hope to direct your attention to a frog’s eye view of the landscape or the oddest shaped clouds. My subjects play and interact with each other in the picture plane. Sometimes I create a silent\, but riotous “plant party”. This party is decorated with balloon shaped clouds and garlands of wild seed heads. This is the lighter side of my work. The darker side of my paintings are about my disappointment in the human race. How we have nearly destroyed our environment. DESCRIPTION:Parks InFocus Exhibit at NCCA-Artsplace\nJanuary 10 – February 28\nCorridor Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace \nParks in Focus is an outdoor based group mentoring program utilizing curriculum provided by the Udall Foundation. The purpose of Parks in Focus is to connect youth to nature through photography. Outings of various lengths take youth to Michigan State Parks\, Public Lands\, and National Parks. \nTrueNorth Community Services’ mentoring program\, TrueMentors hosts the Parks in Focus® program each year. This program connects middle school youth to nature through photography\, environmental education\, outdoor recreation\, and creative expression. Youth receive a point and shoot digital camera\, learn the basics of photography\, and begin exploring. \nIn August of 2022\, eleven students participated in two pre-trip outings and a 5 day camping trip to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula. DESCRIPTION:NCCA-Artsplace Exhibit\nPat Brissette: Origami – The Freedom of Spirit\nOctober 10 – November 12\nArtist Meet and Greet – October 13 – 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. \nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\nPat has loved paper since childhood\, any scrap of paper could keep her entertained for hours. Paper dolls\, airplanes\, folding her very own books\, watching how the wind blew through her hand-held windmill were all a part of her past. Later in life she discovered her passion had a name\, origami\, an ancient Japanese art form of folding two and three dimensional art forms. The simplistic patterns fascinated her the most. Through a culmination of her life time collections and views of the human spirit Pat found a way to express her ideas through this incredible art form. \nOne bird or hundreds of birds can represent their sense of freedom\, flight and resourcefulness. In this exhibit\, Pat has multiplied many simple shapes into art pieces that express her thoughts in today’s world. DESCRIPTION:NCCA-Artsplace Exhibit\nLakeshore Visual Artists Collective\nSeptember 8 – October 8\nArtist Meet and Greet – September 24 – 10:00 a.m. – Noon \nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\nLakeshore Visual Artists Collective is a non-profit organization that partners with other non-profits and businesses in West Michigan to facilitate Pop Up Art shows creating new networking opportunities for lakeshore area artists. \nIn the summer of 2012\, founder Maggie Bandstra\, was taking a class at Oxbow and the Professor Howard Fonda asked the class “Why aren’t you all curating your own shows?” So she looked around the art community and saw a need for artists to have opportunities to connect with each other and the community. From that idea sprang up a few art shows\, in 2014 Art at the Armory\, Art at Loutit\, Art at SLCC\, and Art at the Yard. It takes a village to produce these arts events\, and when artists come together and share their time and talents amazing things happen. DESCRIPTION:Lee Ann Frame – Nature Beckons\nMarch 25 – April 30\nThis intaglio printmaking exhibit by Lee Ann Frame reflects the beauty of the west Michigan landscape. “Landscape is a recurring theme in my prints. There are days when the lure of nature beckons me out of the studio. I prefer drawing on site and other times photographing. Through renderings the image gradually evolves capturing a fleeting moment. Back in the studio compositional drawings are worked out keeping in mind that the image will print in reverse\, a mirror image. Printmaking has proven to be a very satisfying way for me to explore the complexities of the natural world. I am inspired by the physicality of printmaking; creating rich layers and surface textures through the processes. My intention is to focus and immerse into my surroundings whilst implementing my printmaking skills. It is my hope that my work will evolve–like life; finding place and sense of direction\,” states Frame. \nBorn near the shores of Lake Michigan\, Lee Ann currently teaches at Muskegon Community College and owns Norris Creek Printmaking Studio. DESCRIPTION:Sophia Bassett : Patterns of My Childhood\nJanuary 12 – February 26\nThis installation exhibit is a combination of block printmaking\, couture fashion design and autobiographical elements. Sophia Bassett is a postgraduate at Interlochen Arts Academy from Fremont. She frequently uses fibers\, ceramics\, metals\, and printmaking to create her individual pieces and installation work. Her artwork shows how she discovered the ability to create designs that connect to create larger\, ongoing patterns\, taking a small idea and turning it into something that could repeat itself\, creating something powerful. In her work\, she looks at the idea of childhood memories and examines their importance in her life when they were first created and how they continue to impact her. Visitors will enjoy detailed\, layered realism as well as bold\, dashing abstracts in this collection of works from MWCS painters all over Michigan. \nJuror Carolyn Latanision has been recognized for her artistic efforts with many awards and by achieving Signature Membership in both the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society along with Signature Membership in numerous other national societies including Rocky Mountain\, Hudson Valley\, and Pennsylvania Watercolor Societies among others. In 2017\, her painting was chosen as the top award-winning painting in the National Watercolor Society International Exhibition. \nThe Michigan Water Color Society was founded in 1946 by a group of artists who envisioned an organization to promote the awareness of watercolor in Michigan. Jane has written or Illustrated several books for children\, artists and adults.\n\n\n\nLori McElrath Eslick\n\nIs an award winning illustrator with many published books to her name as well as a series of greeting cards developed through Hallmark. She leads workshops\, youth programs and illustrates a monthly column with the Wyoming Wildlife Magazine.\n\n\n\nJanet Hasselbring & Bruce DeVries\n\nThis partnership of author/illustrator has produced a seven book series\, Tales from Pelican Cove\, with lessons about relationships\, as well as the migratory birds and wildlife of North America.\n\n\n\nJanet Hasselbring resides in Spring Lake\, and winters in Sarasota Florida. Janet is the recipient of the 2010 Hertel Children’s Story Award and the 2012 Adult Short Story Award presented my Marantha Writer’s Conference. Her family farm\, Country Dairy\, may be well known to many\, she has published a book about Country Dairy also.\n\n\n\nBruce DeVries is a self-taught artist who works form his home studio in West Michigan. SUMMARY:NCCA-Artsplace Statewide Photography Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The award winners of the 2021 NCCA-Artsplace Statewide Photography Competition were announced on Friday\, August 6. \nThe competition is an annual event that exhibits and acknowledges some of the finest photographers in the state of Michigan.  The exhibit and awards this year were selected by Dianne Carroll Burdick\, a free-lance photographer in Grand Rapids.  Her juror statement and the award winners are listed below. \nThis interesting exhibit is a must-see and everyone is encouraged to stop in and take a stroll around the photographs on display through September 8.  NCCA-Artsplace is located at 13 E. Main Street in downtown Fremont.  Gallery hours are Monday – Friday\, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.\, and Saturday\, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. \n  \nNCCA Statewide Photography Competition 2021\nJuror’s Statement by Dianne Carroll Burdick\nOf the many qualities one might want in an image-beauty\, originality\, skillfulness and personal vision among them-I found myself looking for one more in particular: Is the picture memorable? \nThe quality and range of this year’s submissions made the job choosing which ones to award quite a challenge\, albeit a delightful one. There were many sensitively seen and made photographs. \n1st Place \nNarrative and surreal\, Gail Howorth’s “Then She Walked Away” black and white photograph of someone walking away\, and  not toward\, gives meaning and questions with sun\, sand \, water and story. The viewer wants more and the imagination can walk or run with this one. \n2nd Place \nPlucked from a slice of life\, Henry L. Droski’s “Blue Swallow” black and white photograph is elegant with black\, white and silver tones\, richly outlining the essence of evening. The urban structure with it’s neon lights and old car brings story and the image is technically mastered with taut\, clear-eyed vision. \n3rd Place \nThe owl’s eyes are staring right at you as Lori Rivera’s color image “Just Winging It” soars with technical perfection to capture this bird in flight. Her use of shutter and aperture and the device of a diagonal line brought this image to the definition of the decisive moment. \nHonorable Mention \nRichard Hinton’s “Produce” is a fresh \, textured still life with an artistic palette of color. A wonderful example of contemporary photography with the popular theme of Food\, coupled with the traditional genre of still life. \nHonorable Mention \nLisa Medendorp’s “ I Will If You Won’t”  photograph explores contrast and tension with the combination of color and black and white\, different points of view of the two subjects\, and even the title playing with I Will/You Won’t. SUMMARY:Stacy Niedzwiecki: Photography
DESCRIPTION:NCCA-Artsplace Corridor Gallery: \nStacy first exhibited her photographic work in the 2009 NCCA-Artsplace Statewide Photography Competition! We’re proud to see how far she has come! Niedzwiecki’s photos have a variety of style\, subject matter\, and location. \nStacy has been involved in digital photography for approximately 16 years\, but her art and graphic design career has traversed nearly three decades. Her fascination with nature’s beauty eventually found its way through the camera lens\, netting awards in multiple regional\, national and international competitions. While she is particularly drawn to the beauty found within our own state of Michigan\, the body of work also includes scenes from her travels in Ohio\, Wisconsin\, Colorado\, Minnesota and California. \nDevoted to her art\, Niedzwiecki is a member of the North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA)\, the Rogue River Artists Association\, and has participated in several artist residency programs sponsored by the Glen Arbor Art Association\, as well as the Crosshatch Center for Art & Ecology’s Hill House in Bellaire\, Michigan. Niedzwiecki actively supplies imagery for many Michigan-based CVBs\, the Rockford Economic Development Corporation\, Rockford Chamber of Commerce\, and the Shoreline Visitors’ Guide. \nHer most honored accomplishment is the installation of 63 of her nature images at the permanent art collection in the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion\, which opened in 2008 in Grand Rapids\, Michigan.
