DESCRIPTION:Sophia Bassett : Patterns of My Childhood\nJanuary 12 – February 26\nThis installation exhibit is a combination of block printmaking\, couture fashion design and autobiographical elements. Sophia Bassett is a postgraduate at Interlochen Arts Academy from Fremont. She frequently uses fibers\, ceramics\, metals\, and printmaking to create her individual pieces and installation work. Her artwork shows how she discovered the ability to create designs that connect to create larger\, ongoing patterns\, taking a small idea and turning it into something that could repeat itself\, creating something powerful. In her work\, she looks at the idea of childhood memories and examines their importance in her life when they were first created and how they continue to impact her. DESCRIPTION:MICHIGAN\nWATER COLOR SOCIETY\nTRAVELING EXHIBITION\nOCTOBER 12 – NOVEMBER 13\nNCCA-Artsplace will host the combined 2020/2021 73rd/74th Annual Michigan Water Color Traveling Exhibition\, juried by acclaimed artist Carolyn Latanision AWS\, NWS. This exhibit is a combination of 2020 and 2021 juried works from multiple talented Michigan water color artists. Visitors will enjoy detailed\, layered realism as well as bold\, dashing abstracts in this collection of works from MWCS painters all over Michigan. \nJuror Carolyn Latanision has been recognized for her artistic efforts with many awards and by achieving Signature Membership in both the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society along with Signature Membership in numerous other national societies including Rocky Mountain\, Hudson Valley\, and Pennsylvania Watercolor Societies among others. In 2017\, her painting was chosen as the top award-winning painting in the National Watercolor Society International Exhibition. \nThe Michigan Water Color Society was founded in 1946 by a group of artists who envisioned an organization to promote the awareness of watercolor in Michigan. She leads workshops\, youth programs and illustrates a monthly column with the Wyoming Wildlife Magazine.\n\n\n\nJanet Hasselbring & Bruce DeVries\n\nThis partnership of author/illustrator has produced a seven book series\, Tales from Pelican Cove\, with lessons about relationships\, as well as the migratory birds and wildlife of North America.\n\n\n\nJanet Hasselbring resides in Spring Lake\, and winters in Sarasota Florida. Janet is the recipient of the 2010 Hertel Children’s Story Award and the 2012 Adult Short Story Award presented my Marantha Writer’s Conference. SUMMARY:NCCA-Artsplace Statewide Photography Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The award winners of the 2021 NCCA-Artsplace Statewide Photography Competition were announced on Friday\, August 6. \nThe competition is an annual event that exhibits and acknowledges some of the finest photographers in the state of Michigan.  The exhibit and awards this year were selected by Dianne Carroll Burdick\, a free-lance photographer in Grand Rapids.  Her juror statement and the award winners are listed below. \nThis interesting exhibit is a must-see and everyone is encouraged to stop in and take a stroll around the photographs on display through September 8.  NCCA-Artsplace is located at 13 E. Main Street in downtown Fremont.  Gallery hours are Monday – Friday\, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.\, and Saturday\, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. \n  \nNCCA Statewide Photography Competition 2021\nJuror’s Statement by Dianne Carroll Burdick\nOf the many qualities one might want in an image-beauty\, originality\, skillfulness and personal vision among them-I found myself looking for one more in particular: Is the picture memorable? \nThe quality and range of this year’s submissions made the job choosing which ones to award quite a challenge\, albeit a delightful one. There were many sensitively seen and made photographs. \n1st Place \nNarrative and surreal\, Gail Howorth’s “Then She Walked Away” black and white photograph of someone walking away\, and  not toward\, gives meaning and questions with sun\, sand \, water and story. The viewer wants more and the imagination can walk or run with this one. \n2nd Place \nPlucked from a slice of life\, Henry L. Droski’s “Blue Swallow” black and white photograph is elegant with black\, white and silver tones\, richly outlining the essence of evening. The urban structure with it’s neon lights and old car brings story and the image is technically mastered with taut\, clear-eyed vision. \n3rd Place \nThe owl’s eyes are staring right at you as Lori Rivera’s color image “Just Winging It” soars with technical perfection to capture this bird in flight. Her use of shutter and aperture and the device of a diagonal line brought this image to the definition of the decisive moment. \nHonorable Mention \nRichard Hinton’s “Produce” is a fresh \, textured still life with an artistic palette of color. A wonderful example of contemporary photography with the popular theme of Food\, coupled with the traditional genre of still life. \nHonorable Mention \nLisa Medendorp’s “ I Will If You Won’t”  photograph explores contrast and tension with the combination of color and black and white\, different points of view of the two subjects\, and even the title playing with I Will/You Won’t. SUMMARY:Stacy Niedzwiecki: Photography
DESCRIPTION:NCCA-Artsplace Corridor Gallery: \nStacy first exhibited her photographic work in the 2009 NCCA-Artsplace Statewide Photography Competition! We’re proud to see how far she has come! Niedzwiecki’s photos have a variety of style\, subject matter\, and location. \nStacy has been involved in digital photography for approximately 16 years\, but her art and graphic design career has traversed nearly three decades. Her fascination with nature’s beauty eventually found its way through the camera lens\, netting awards in multiple regional\, national and international competitions. While she is particularly drawn to the beauty found within our own state of Michigan\, the body of work also includes scenes from her travels in Ohio\, Wisconsin\, Colorado\, Minnesota and California. \nDevoted to her art\, Niedzwiecki is a member of the North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA)\, the Rogue River Artists Association\, and has participated in several artist residency programs sponsored by the Glen Arbor Art Association\, as well as the Crosshatch Center for Art & Ecology’s Hill House in Bellaire\, Michigan. Niedzwiecki actively supplies imagery for many Michigan-based CVBs\, the Rockford Economic Development Corporation\, Rockford Chamber of Commerce\, and the Shoreline Visitors’ Guide. \nHer most honored accomplishment is the installation of 63 of her nature images at the permanent art collection in the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion\, which opened in 2008 in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. SUMMARY:Paintings by Charles Allen LaRue: Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Paintings by Charles Allen LaRue\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\, 13 E. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022.\nCharles is a Michigan native and it is from the Great Lakes State that he derives much of his inspiration for his colorful interpretations of the structures and organic forms that he depicts. \nHe had drawn pictures since he was old enough to grasp a pencil in his fist\, and sought a way of doing something with his love of picture- making. So upon high school graduation he moved from South Haven to Grand Rapids to attend the Kendall College of Art and Design\, graduating with an Illustration major. Charles freelanced and did in-house work as an illustrator. \nCharles had three pivotal experiences that collectively catapulted him into going headlong into pure Fine Arts painting. He spent a summer in France where he studied informally and steeped himself in the paintings and scenery of what he had previously known only through reproductions in art books. He began seeing light and colors more robustly in everything. When Charles returned to Grand Rapids with a new vision and essentially truly beheld GR’s Heritage Hill area for the first time he saw the neighborhood as a shapescape\, with clustered architectonic geometries\, as he had been sensitized to in Paris. The colors flooded in for him that had been pale in comparison to his older work. \nLater\, Charles moved from purely geometrized patterns all coalescing\, into paintings that allowed more atmosphere and fluid\, organic elements. But he still paints in the manner of a craftsman; feeling as though he is assembling discrete units of colored materials into a gestalt image. He was a gifted painter\, sculptor\, wood worker\, boat builder\, potter\, photographer and by trade a talented architectural designer. While designing over 300 architectural jobs in 30 years as a design agency of one\, Ray and Phyllis raised four children\, and Ray created thousands of original works of fine art. Ray’s studio\, located just behind their Ramshorn home\, was always open. DESCRIPTION:March 23 – April 27\nHot Wax: The Art of Batik and Pysanky\nArtwork by Lara Cummings and Dena DeKryger\nDemonstration Thursday\, April 25\, 5:30-7:00\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\, 13 E. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022. \nThe use of wax in fine art has thousands of years of history in art forms such as batik and pysanky. This exhibit features two local artists\, Lara Cummings’ Pysanky egg design and Dena DeKryger’s batik paintings. \nLara Cummings is a former Jansma Scholarship recipient and has explored many fine art mediums. Her love of Pysanky eggs comes from a family heritage tradition that she decided to explore and excel at. Pysanka is a Ukrainian Easter egg\, decorated with traditional Ukrainian folk designs using a wax-resist method. \nDena DeKryger states “For me\, the art of batik encompasses boldness\, serendipity\, individuality\, and memory. Each decision that goes into making a batik must be bold because that decision cannot be reversed or amended. Once the wax hits the muslin\, the color of the fabric beneath the wax is defined.” \nOn Thursday\, April 25\, enjoy free demonstrations in Batik by Kris Vredeveld\, and Pysanky by Lindsay Isenhart. DESCRIPTION:West Michigan Potters Guild\nFebruary 4 through 23\nReception: Saturday\, February 23 – 10:00 a.m. – Noon\nThis exhibit showcases a selection of WMPG members creating clay work in a wide variety of processes and styles. Stop in and expand your knowledge of ceramics and support these West Michigan artists! \nWest Michigan Potters Guild began in 1983 as a group of clay artists organized to improve their own ceramic skills by providing a stimulating and inspirational discussion of technical problems\, mutual interests and shared successes\, also to acquaint the general public with standards\, ethics and appreciation of ceramic art. This is accomplished through lectures\, discussions\, seminars\, workshops and group exhibitions. These events are organized and sponsored by the guild and its members. Membership is open to all who are interested in the goals of this organization. The guild is currently over 80 members who specialize in a variety of firing techniques and construction methods in both functional and non-functional forms. The public is invited to attend workshops and bi-annual shows sponsored by the guild and experience the wealth of talent and knowledge that this guild has to offer. \nCharter members of this organization have seen many changes\, from a beginning of less that one dozen the guild has now grown to over 70 members. The guild sponsors and organizes two members sales each year. The Spring Show is held in April and the Fall Show in November at the St. Nicholas Antioichian Orthodox Church. Each show is an opportunity for art patrons to see the amazing diversity of technique and product. The guild sponsors 1 or 2 workshops each year. These educational workshops bring icons of the ceramic world\, to demonstrate their own approach to this art form.
