Now as a children’s book author and illustrator\, I’ve illustrated 20 plus picture books a few are also in watercolor. That said\, to paint at any level is to have fun. Art should be about having fun.” \nVicki Beyer\n“Art has been a lifelong passion for me. It’s always a challenge to capture the line & colors of what I see or from my imagination. My father was my earliest influence\, as he enjoyed drawing funny doodles on me & my siblings\, like a fox chasing a rabbit towards a hole that also doubled as my belly button\, a worm crawling out of my ear\, a bee on the end of my nose\, etc.” \n“Over the years\, I made my living as a Registered Nurse and raised two children\, and continued to work on my art skills. SUMMARY:NCCA-Artsplace 2024 Statewide Photography Competition
DESCRIPTION:NCCA-Artsplace 2024 Statewide Photography Competition \nOur goal is to exhibit and acknowledge the finest photographers in the State of Michigan and encourage greater growth and achievement in the photographic community. This is a juried competition. Selected works will be exhibited and among them will be the honor of 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd place and honorable mentions receiving ribbons and cash awards. \nAward winners are:\n1st Place – Bob Brown for Tulip – Elegance of Form\n2nd Place – Dianne Carroll Burdick for Lotus Flowers\n3rd Place – Tim Motley for Boys in the Band\nHonorable Mention – Stone Peng for Milkweed Pod\nHonorable Mention – Russ Barneveld for The Visitor\n \nJuror: Randy Nyhof\nI have been involved in photography for over 50 years. In regards to the technical aspects of photography I am self-taught. I learned the aesthetic values from my art experience\, and looking at what was considered good photography. To a great extent my approach to fine art photography has been influenced by my education in college\, majoring in studio art. I have been influenced by many artists and photographers too numerous to mention. At first I used 35mm & medium format film cameras\, but now all my images are captured with various digital cameras. I owned and operated a photography business for over 40 years engaging in wedding photography\, senior portraits\, family portraits\, underclass school day portraits\, yearbook publications and commercial product photography. More recently\, I have become involved in producing photographic fine art images. In addition to participating in local art shows and competitions within the last 20 years\, I have had images published in Popular Photography Magazine\, Canada’s PhotoLife Magazine\, B&W Magazine\, Focus Magazine\, Austria’s Trierenberg Super Circuit Publications\, Photographer’s Forum Best of Photography Annuals\, Black River Calendar Publishing and local publications. I have also licensed photographs for several book covers\, music CD covers\, including one for an Australian Blues Band\, even a background screen for a British Rock Group. I have also licensed a number of my images to be sold on products at the Hobby Lobby Stores and on fabric with Northcott Silk. Now\, in my supposedly retirement\, I keep busy with steady fine art photography online sales on several shop sites\, and am involved in local art & photography organizations\, most notably with Grand Valley Artists. \nEntry Guidelines \n• Must be Michigan resident\, 18 or older\, to submit work.\n• Work must be framed and ready to display or finished appropriately.\n• All photographic processes are accepted.\n• NCCA reserves the right to decline artwork for any reason.\n• Accepted work may be placed for sale during the exhibit.\n• A 30% commission is charged on all sales during exhibit.\n• Each eligible photographer may submit up to two photographs.\n• Entry labels must be firmly affixed to the back of the entries.\n• Please indicate the photographic process in your description. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022.\nFounded in 1946\, the Michigan Water Color Society mission is to promote a stronger awareness and interest in watercolor as well as advancement of the watercolor media as an art form\, through presentation\, workshops\, juried shows and artist networking. Their aim was to further watercolor education\, maintain high standards artistically\, while based on the premise of integrity and professionalism\, and to be a forum open to all points of view. The annual travel show includes 30 award winning paintings selected by the MWCS to tour the state of Michigan. In 2018 she began using a mirrorless digital camera for the first time and fell in love with photography as a\, art-form rather than a career tool. Cathy primarily shoots landscapes and wildlife but also enjoys travel and cityscape/urban photography. DESCRIPTION:Block Print – “Patchwork Printmaking” \nwith Cheryl Gould\nSat.\, April 22 and 29 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. .\nAges 16+ $65 ($60 Members)\nYou’ll find a great example of reduction block printing in “Feathered Friends” block print by Cheryl Gould. Chryl will guide students through a two-step block print\, with rainbow inking rolls to include more color variation. Participants should come prepared with an idea\, sketches or reference pictures for their block. Possibilities might include butterflies\, leaves\, birds\, flowers\, coffee cups\, quilt blocks\, but anything that could be fit into a square would work. Designs will be carved into a 4” by 4” block\, and printed individually and grouped into 4 block by 4 block designs. Participants can also collaborate with each other! The first day introduce reduction block printing\, then participants will draw and carve the block\, grid up the paper\, and complete the first layer of printing. DESCRIPTION:NCCA-Artsplace Exhibit\nPaintings by Mary Sundstrom\nMarch 29 – April 29\nReception April 22\,10:00 a.m. – Noon\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\nMary Sundstrom is a West Michigan painter\, illustrator\, jeweler and sculptor\, influenced by the natural world of the region. As a naturalist\, she is fascinated by creatures\, fungi and plants living among the bayous surrounding the Grand River near where she lives. Her playful oil paintings represent what she sees in the landscape mixed with her own perceptions. When Mary is not creating she is traveling with her husband Randy or working at the Holland Area Arts Council where she designs and curates exhibitions and public art projects. \n“Pattern” is the word that plays through my mind as I sketch small thumbnails that turn into oil paintings. My favorite subject matter are the plants\, objects and reflected shapes of the water and sky. I also appreciate a wet and muddy pondside or unsung weeds. I hope to direct your attention to a frog’s eye view of the landscape or the oddest shaped clouds. My subjects play and interact with each other in the picture plane. Sometimes I create a silent\, but riotous “plant party”. This party is decorated with balloon shaped clouds and garlands of wild seed heads. This is the lighter side of my work. The darker side of my paintings are about my disappointment in the human race. How we have nearly destroyed our environment. Enjoy work by Lee Ann Frame\, Cheryl Gould\, Andrew Jagniecki and Kris Vredeveld among others. \nThe history of printmaking began in the Han Dynasty\, China. The earliest known example\, a woodblock print on silk\, has been dated sometime during the Han Dynasty from 206 B.C. to 220 A.D. DESCRIPTION:Parks InFocus Exhibit at NCCA-Artsplace\nJanuary 10 – February 28\nCorridor Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace \nParks in Focus is an outdoor based group mentoring program utilizing curriculum provided by the Udall Foundation. The purpose of Parks in Focus is to connect youth to nature through photography. Outings of various lengths take youth to Michigan State Parks\, Public Lands\, and National Parks. \nTrueNorth Community Services’ mentoring program\, TrueMentors hosts the Parks in Focus® program each year. This program connects middle school youth to nature through photography\, environmental education\, outdoor recreation\, and creative expression. Youth receive a point and shoot digital camera\, learn the basics of photography\, and begin exploring. \nIn August of 2022\, eleven students participated in two pre-trip outings and a 5 day camping trip to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula. Paper dolls\, airplanes\, folding her very own books\, watching how the wind blew through her hand-held windmill were all a part of her past. Later in life she discovered her passion had a name\, origami\, an ancient Japanese art form of folding two and three dimensional art forms. The simplistic patterns fascinated her the most. Through a culmination of her life time collections and views of the human spirit Pat found a way to express her ideas through this incredible art form. \nOne bird or hundreds of birds can represent their sense of freedom\, flight and resourcefulness. In this exhibit\, Pat has multiplied many simple shapes into art pieces that express her thoughts in today’s world. From that idea sprang up a few art shows\, in 2014 Art at the Armory\, Art at Loutit\, Art at SLCC\, and Art at the Yard. It takes a village to produce these arts events\, and when artists come together and share their time and talents amazing things happen. He primarily provides photography for businesses. As a fine artist\, Reinecke’s work has been exhibited in several Michigan galleries and museums. Including the Muskegon Museum of Art\, Grand Rapids Art Museum\, Lansing Museum of Art\, the Krasl Art Center St. Joseph Michigan and Kalamazoo Institute of Art.
