DESCRIPTION:NCCA-Artsplace and Dogwood Center for the Performing Arts present the West Michigan Luthier Concert\, an event that is the ultimate combination of music and visual arts. On Saturday\, February 9\, at 7:30 p.m.\, the concert will combine the beautiful artistry of local luthiers\, stringed instrument makers\, from throughout West Michigan with the talents of gifted musicians. \nThis great evening will begin with Catlin Hill and Soul Vine (Jennifer Schofield\, Tallulah Lancaster\, and Brooke Fletcher) performing with violins made by Elon Howe. Luthier Keith Caldwell\, accompanied by Jerry Roberts\, Jack Schipper\, and Michelle Emmorey\, will be performing with Caldwell’s handmade instruments. Luthier and Dobro expert\, Tim Scheerhorn will be performing for the first time in the West Michigan Luthier Concert with one of his Resonator guitars. Following Tim will be luthier Don Benson accompanied by his granddaughters\, Cyanne and Cora\, who are both learning the art of lutherie. Sue Anderson will begin the second half of the concert performing with one of the late Robert Sayers guitars. Luthier Jim Spalink will again be performing with his beautiful harps. The evening will wrap up with Ralston Bowles\, performing with a guitar made by luthier Bryan Galloup. \nThe live performance will also include a chance to meet the artists. A meet and greet reception will be from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. in the lobby of the Dogwood Center. This is an opportunity to learn about the instrument building process and view the instruments. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.\, in the Dogwood Center Black Box with doors opening at 7:00 p.m. for seating. \nTo complement the concert\, an exhibit of photographs of handmade instruments made by West Michigan luthiers will be on display in the Dogwood Lobby Gallery from January 22 through February 23. The photographs include ukuleles\, violins\, violas\, banjos and acoustic guitars. \nCome out and enjoy this popular concert by regional musicians performing on hand-made instruments from West Michigan luthiers. \nSOLD OUT $12.50. Felty and Bremmer have decades of experience building custom guitars and are now passing on their years of experience to their students. Luthier Keith Caldwell\, accompanied by Gene Calkins\, Ian Tronsen and Jerry Roberts\, will be performing with Caldwell’s handmade instruments. Mark Swanson\, of Swanson Stringed Instruments\, will round out the first half of the concert. Following Mark will be Don Benson accompanied by the vocals of Megan Wirts and Benson’s 11 year old granddaughter\, Cyanne\, who will be playing a ukulele that she built herself. Chester Winowiecki and the “Bearded Ladies Men” (Adrian Schuster\, Carl and Lisa Ziemelis) will entertain the audience while playing Chester’s homemade instruments including cigar box guitars and a washtub bass.  Ending the set will be Katie Springer and popular past performer\, fiddle player Isaac Smith\, both who will be performing on violins made by Elon Howe. \nThe live performance will also include a chance to meet the artists. DESCRIPTION:Vincent Hayes returns to the Dogwood Center Black Box on September 14!  Nominated by the Blues Foundation for the prestigious 2011 Blues Music Award for “Best New Artist Debut” for their internationally successful debut CD\, “Reclamation”\, the West Michigan-based group has carved a rapidly growing reputation as one of the favorite roots and blues bands around. \nDriven by Hayes dynamic\, sensitive guitar work and one of the most powerful rhythm sections in the modern blues industry\, the four piece band’s performances are dominated by grooving rhythms\, stinging guitar\, memorable songs\, and lively\, show stopping musicianship. \nIt has been a busy summer for Vincent Hayes.  Most recently he and his band (formerly known as The Vincent Hayes Project)\, were honored with an invitation to warm up the stage for the “King of the Blues” himself\, BB King\, at FrederikMeijerGardens in Grand Rapids. Just a few weeks later they found themselves in their first official “headliner” slot on a triple bill with blues legend Buddy Guy\, and blues/rock hero Jonny Lang at the 2013 Coast West Festival\, where they quickly gained the favor of the crowd of 9\,000 rock and blues fans. \nWith a new CD\, “The Grind”\, just released in late August\, Hayes and his stellar rhythm section showcase their evolution as a songwriter and a guitar force to be reckoned with. There are eight new Hayes originals on “The Grind”\, in addition to an interpretation of “Inner City Blues”\, the 1971 classic by Marvin Gaye\, and the moody and dark “Not Tonight”\, a collaborative song penned by West Michigan singer/songwriter Joel Toppen\, and arranged by Hayes and the band. \nIn February 2011\, Vincent and the band swept the WYCE Jammie Awards by winning four Jammies in the categories of “Album of the Year\, Best Blues Album\, Best New Artist\, and Producer of the Year (Glenn Brown)”\, before receiving two 2011 Blues Blast Award Nominations for “Best New Artist and the Sean Costello Rising Star Award.”  The CD “Reclamation was” additionally voted as one of the top 100 Blues CD’s of 2010-2011 by Real Blues magazine\, and Vincent also appeared on the cover of the March 2012 issue of France’s Blues & Co. magazine. \nThe Saturday\, September 14 performance begins at 7:30 pm.
