Lori has illustrated several books including Nishnawbe\, A Story of Indians in Michigan\, by Lynne Deur; The Lark Who Had No Song by Carolyn Nystrom; Does God Know How to Tie Shoes? by Nancy White Carlstrom; I Am Christmas by Nancy White Carlstrom; Read For Me\, Mama by Vashanti Rahaman; Da Wei’s Treasure by Raymond and Margaret Chang; Mommy Poems by John Micklos Jr.; From Slavery to Freedom by Melinda Lilly and Jean Nickolet; The Sign of the Thunderbird by Peter and Connie Roup; If Jesus Came to my House by Joan Gale Thomas and Barefoot\, Poems for Naked Feet by Stefi Weisburd\, among other freelance works. She also received the 2008 Magazine Merit Honor Award-Society of Children’s Book Authors and illustrators. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022. \nThe 1880-1920 Arts and Crafts Movement was a critique of industrial society\, the modern factory\, the use of machinery and the loss of traditional craft methods. The Arts and Crafts forefathers thought that a healthy and moral society required independent workers who designed the things they made. \nToday in addition to the result of the industrial revolution\, we have the technological revolution. Objects are made on assembly lines\, of which the worker is one more step removed from the process by automated assembly\, and computerized manipulation\, like that of the 3D printer. The loss of traditional craft methods is concerning. \nThis exhibit is curated to bring to the forefront traditional art forms\, hand made craftsmanship\, and hopefully to pass on those traditions to the next generation. DESCRIPTION:June 5 through July 7\nJudith Tummino – SOJOURN\nPaintings of Michigan and the Chesapeake Bay\nReception June 21\, 5:30-7:00 p.m.\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\, 13 E. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022.  \n\nJudith Tummino has often stated that her first year of study in Italy was a life changing event.\n“I fell in love with the light\, the art\, the people.”\nShe felt so strongly that she returned to Umbria about 9 times in 8 years. \n“Studying with teaching artists such as Lennart Anderson\, Israel Hershberg\, Nick Carone\,\nDan Gustin and William Bailey contributed to my knowledge of art and the formation of what and how I wanted to paint.” \nBorn in Washington D. C. and raised in Maryland\, Judith received exposure to the many art museums and galleries. Travels to the Chesapeake Bay and the Shenandoah Valley instilled the love of the landscape as well as the sense of the untouched beauty of the land. \n“My appreciation of the moment is central to my work. I find that as my painting evolves I become sensitive to both the change of the conditions I am painting as well as to the changes on my pallette and painting surface. It is this transformation that keeps me coming back to the painted experience. It never loses its interest for me”. \nJudith has exhibited widely in the United States as well as in Italy. Her first experience showing in New York came when she was accepted into a show juried by Phillip Pearlstein. She showed her work in the Chelsea district of New York for about four years. DESCRIPTION:Madelon Gorsky – February 1 through 26\nPublic Reception February 24\, 12:00 – 2:00 p.m.\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\, \n13 E. Main St.\, Fremont.\nBorn in Ohio\, Madelon was raised and spent her adult years moving around the Midwest\, Northeast and the South; from Chicago\, St.Louis\, Portland Maine\, Indianapolis and cities in between. She now resides in Newaygo County. Many educational opportunities plus a successful career in retail visual merchandising designing and creating displays gave her the foundation and opportunity to learn the basics of composition\, color\, textures\, movement\, and light. Madelon now has focused her creative energy with colorful acrylic paint with a hint of mixed media on canvas. This modernist is willing in her compositions to bend\, reshape and even distort her subjects in an on going effort to create depth and perspective without sacrificing the purity and brightness of her colors. Her goal is to always bring a smile and a little thought to the viewer. Madelon’s work has been viewed in galleries and seasoned shows and in many private and corporate collections from coast  to coast throughout the United States and Canada. \n“I have a passion for all forms of art. I enjoy bringing ease and comfort to my surroundings. I have been a people watcher as long as I can remember. Everyday people of all shapes and sizes inspire me\, from the curves of the figure to the expressive eyes and lips of the face. My work expresses my fascination of people not controversy\, chaos or hidden meaning. I try to generate something positive with my work and leave the negatives behind. For me it’s simply about putting the paint on the canvas\, I enjoy doing just that. DESCRIPTION:Stacy Niedzwiecki: What Fifty Looks Like\nJanuary 3 – 28\nFree Public Reception January 25\, 5:30-7:00 p.m.\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\, 13 E. Main St.\, Fremont. \nWhat Fifty Looks Like covers Stacy’s adventures and endeavors from past to present. Interesting to note\, Stacy first exhibited her photographic work in the 2009 NCCA-Artsplace Statewide Photography Competition! We’re proud to see where she’s been! Niedzwiecki’s photos have a variety of style\, subject matter\, and location\, as demonstrated in the Retrospective exhibit. This includes landscapes\, bodies of water\, flowers\, farms\, wildlife\, abstracts\, portraiture and more. In celebration of the artist’s 50th birthday\, the exhibit features 50 photographs reproduced on an assortment of materials and surfaces. Included within this show are pieces from “Congruity” – an inspiring collaborative ArtPrize entry by Stacy and author Jeannie Gregory. \nStacy has been involved in digital photography for approximately 15 years\, but her art and graphic design career has traversed nearly three decades. Her fascination with nature’s beauty eventually found its way through the camera lens\, netting awards in multiple regional\, national and international competitions. While she is particularly drawn to the beauty found within our own state of Michigan\, the body of work also includes scenes from her travels in Ohio\, Wisconsin\, Colorado\, Minnesota and California. \nDevoted to her art\, Niedzwiecki is a member of the North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA)\, the Rogue River Artists Association\, and has participated in several artist residency programs sponsored by the Glen Arbor Art Association\, as well as the Crosshatch Center for Art & Ecology’s Hill House in Bellaire\, Michigan. Niedzwiecki actively supplies imagery for Stacy Lake CVB\, the Rockford Economic Development Corporation\, Rockford Chamber of Commerce\, Michigan BLUE magazine and the Shoreline Visitors’ Guide. \nHer most honored accomplishment is the installation of 63 of her nature images at the permanent art collection in the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion\, which opened in 2008 in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. DESCRIPTION:Parks in Focus Celebrates with Photo Exhibit\, Reception November 9 – On exhibit through December 31.\nNEWAYGO COUNTY\, MI — Fourteen Newaygo County middle and high school students took part in a six-day immersion taking them to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Seney National Wildlife Refuge in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in August.\nThe results of the experience\, a partnership between Udall Foundation’s Parks in Focus program and TrueNorth Community Services\, go on display November 1 at Newaygo County Council for the Arts’ NCCA-Artsplace. To celebrate the efforts by the 10- to 16-year-olds who took part from TrueNorth’s TrueMentors\, Camp Newaygo and Project FOCUS programs\, a public reception is slated 6 p.m.- 7 p.m. November 9 at NCCA-Artsplace\, 13 East Main Street in Fremont.\nThe students connected with nature through photography\, environmental and conservation education\, outdoor experiences and creative expression with the project\, which has been going on in Michigan every summer since 2007. They took 10\,798 photos during this summer’s trek\, and their best 14 images are on display in the NCCA-Artsplace exhibit through the end of December.\n“Introducing kids in a hands-on way to the great outdoors provides them with learning opportunities they just might not get otherwise\,” said Lisa Daniell\, director of TrueNorth’s Volunteer Resource Center of Newaygo County. “While the program instructs them on basic photography and the Great Lakes’ biodiversity\, flora and fauna\, it’s just as much about building their confidence and a sense of adventure.”\nTrueMentors is a mentoring program targeting 5- to 14-year-olds\, pairing adult volunteers with youth in communitybased matches and high school and middle school students with elementary and middle schoolers in site-based matches. Project FOCUS is an out-of-school program with adventure and academic enrichment activities at schools in Baldwin\, Hart\, Hesperia\, Muskegon Heights\, Walkerville and White Cloud. Main St.\, Fremont. 231-924-4022. \n“Over several years Brenda Beerhorst has developed an intuitive process of creating free form shapes in overlapping colorful layers of acrylic\, gouache\, and ink on wooden panels. With each successive layer\, shapes and color blocks are created\, rearranged or even covered completely. Between layers\, delicate and timeworn textures are made through reductive sanding. She works on multiple panels simultaneously\, though the colors and patterns can vary significantly from one piece to the next as the works take on distinct personalities.” -Michael DeMaagd Rodriguez \nAs the wife of well-known Grand Rapids painter\, Rick Beerhorst\, and the mother of six artist children\, Brenda has long been a familiar fixture in the West Michigan arts community. DESCRIPTION:September 6 through October 14\nJana Hanka – Wood Fired Clay \nReception September 29\, 5:30-7:00 p.m.\n Jansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\, 13 E. Main St.\, Fremont. 231-924-4022.\nJana earned her MFA from the Prague Academy of Fine Arts in 1980 and has been living in the USA since 1987. She has participated in several hundred shows in the intervening years – 60 of them as featured artist.\nJana began life as a painter and has slowly evolved into a sculptor\, employing clay and bronze. Her currently displayed work is mostly ceramic sculpture.\n“I have grown particularly fond of the rough and unpredictable earthy effects created by ash deposits and microclimates within the large fire-breathing dragon of a kiln we use for week-long Anagama Japanese-style wood-firings. It is a force unto itself\, beautiful and primal and the work that comes from the kiln is a reflection of that ancient process\,” states Jana. “I died falling from a horse and woke up in a hospital a month later – and suddenly nothing is as it seems – ever again. My life and artwork were changed completely. All bets were off and my life became that of a seeker after truth and visions of the numinous and intangible. That’s what my works ultimately represent – me becoming something deeper in relationship and developing alongside the other – the non-human. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022.\nLast Garden Dress by Amy Wilkinson \nAn energetic synergy is released when Lisa Medendorp’s abstract paintings and the surrealistic sculptures of Amy Wilkinson get together. The dancing\, twisting painted forms on canvas create a fitting surround to the restrained tension held in sculptural suspension. \nSentinel by Lisa Medendorp \nThe totemic\, somewhat figurative forms in Medendorp’s paintings evoke mythological styles\, The Lake Marcher’s series can be interpreted as being mythological defenders of the environment who march across Lake Michigan with the ever changing weather fronts. \nWilkinson utilizes wrapped wire and other fibers to create an eclectic weaving of reclaimed materials. Her themes involve strength\, beauty\, and perseverance lightly veiled in nostalgia\, and encourage frugality when considering our resource allocations. \nThe two artists share a respect for the environment that is evident by the re-purposing of discarded materials in Wilkinson’s rustic assemblages that are in harmony with the themes that underlie Medendorp’s paintings. Meeting bi-monthly\, the group encourages artists working in printmaking and promotes excellence in the various print mediums. Through exhibitions of their works\, SWMP helps to encourage public knowledge\, understanding\, and support for printmaking. \nThe prints from this invitational were exhibited at both Little Cities Gallery in Kalamazoo\, and in the Ginza Tower Gallery in Tokyo\, Japan. The exhibit encompasses a wide selection of printmaking materials and processes. \nThe KIA print studio is enjoying renewed interest from the community. DESCRIPTION:NCCA-Artsplace 2017 Statewide Photography Competition:\nOur goal is to exhibit and acknowledge the finest photographers in the State of Michigan and encourage greater growth and achievement in the photographic community. This is a juried competition. Selected works will be exhibited and among them will be the honor of 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd place and honorable mentions receiving ribbons and cash awards ($250\, $150\, $100\, $50). \nJuror: Anthony Thompson\nAnthony Thompson is Professor of Photography in the School of Communications at Grand Valley State University in Allendale\, Michigan\, where he is a former Director of the school and is now head of the school’s photography program. He earned a B.S. in Physics from the University of Dallas and an M.F.A. in Photography from Washington University in Saint Louis. A native of Colorado\, he has lived and worked in Rome\, Italy as a freelance photographer\, and has previously worked as a photographer in several mid-west commercial advertising studios.\nAnthony’s personal photographic work has been included in numerous juried exhibitions nationally and internationally\, including several one and two-person exhibitions at university and commercial galleries. His recent work has included a documentary project on nuclear weapons facilities in the American west\, and a series of work in photogravure and other alternative processes that combines photography\, printmaking\, and sculpture. His work is included in several collections\, including the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago-Midwest Photographer’s Project\, the Wisconsin State Historical Society\, the Rocky Flats Cold War Museum collection in Colorado\, in addition to several university and private collections. SUMMARY:Dogwood Center Exhibit: Richard Wieth
DESCRIPTION:Richard Wieth\nMarch 25 – May 20\nDogwood Center Lobby Gallery \n \nRichard D. Wieth is a West Michigan artist who has been painting\, drawing and thinking creatively for almost all of his life. Born in Chicago\, he attended Loyola Academy Prep before heading to the University of Denver. \nRichard has been a full time artist for over twenty years and in that time his work has been included in many juried shows including the Oil Painters of America and the Pastel Society of America. \nBy Richard about his work: \n“I would like everyone who looks at my paintings to know for a moment the simple beauty of the simple things in life.  All too often people get caught up in details and fail to appreciate the enjoyment of simplicity.  I do not attempt to paint photographically and I always want my viewer to know without a doubt that they are viewing a painting. \n I paint with an impressionistic style that I believe lends itself to adding mystery and expression.  Art is true self-expression\, each color\, brush stroke or lack of brush stroke conveys emotion and self-expression.  I put a lot of faith in the viewer that they will be able to piece together the mystery\, without spelling out every detail.  This interaction will help the viewer enjoy not only the moment of time that I am creating but also the painting as an art itself.\nI would love it if people could see the simplicity of still lifes in their everyday environment or the deeper beauty of animals\, nature\, and people.  All of these subjects in their moments of simple beauty I render in a spontaneous\, direct\, and confident manner\, in a hope that people will interact with my work more deeply and engagingly.  The ultimate goal of contributing to the beauty and enjoyment of life. \nI hope that the energy and love that I put into my work will remain with the painting and will provide that loving energy to the viewers.” \nThis exhibit combines a collection of colorful landscape and impressionistic still life paintings. \nShare this:ShareFacebookTwitterPrintEmailLinkedInPinterest

Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022. \nWithin the world of art\, Picardo continues to expose the synthesization of his universe through expressive grounds of astounding interpretation. Always showcasing the manifestations of human existence within life’s procession\, Erick Picardo is slowly approaching a shift towards the realm of contemporary art. Defined by the dominance of foreground\, size\, and supremacy of color\, the role of the long and oval-shaped faceless bodies in his paintings appear as a blurring balance between abstraction and mysterious expression that always quickly show to one’s eye\, that the world in which his creations come from\, is not our own. It is easy to recognize cubist stylings and an influence of artists like Pablo Picasso while Erick expresses the rhythms of music and life of the Latin community through his paintings. From the automatic captivation of Picardo’s gorgeous paintings of oil and acrylic mixtures\, the viewer cannot help but to notice the richness and beauty of the colors he chooses and how these colors help display the powerful harmony of complex values in society that sometimes pose a conflict to each other. Teachers and parents of children from the Newaygo County area submitted artwork from youth Kindergarten through 6th grade. Winning selections were made and will be on display at three venues in Newaygo County: 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd place\, Honorable Mention\, and Special Recognition winners will be on display at NCCA-Artsplace. The award ceremony will be March 24 at the Dogwood Center for Performing Arts. \nIn addition all pieces of artwork selected will be photographed and projected during the Grand Rapids Symphony performance on April 12 at the Dogwood Center. SUMMARY:NCCA-Artsplace West Michigan Luthier Concert - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Tickets for this event are SOLD OUT. The NCCA-Artsplace West Michigan Luthier Concert is the ultimate combination of music and visual arts. On Saturday\, February 11\, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dogwood Center’s Black Box\, this concert will combine the beautiful artistry of local luthiers\, stringed instrument makers\, from throughout West Michigan with the talents of gifted musicians. \nThis great evening will begin with TW Felty\, Don Bremmer and Fred Kacos of Great Lakes Academy of Guitar Building. Felty and Bremmer have decades of experience building custom guitars and are now passing on their years of experience to their students. Luthier Keith Caldwell\, accompanied by Gene Calkins\, Ian Tronsen and Jerry Roberts\, will be performing with Caldwell’s handmade instruments. Mark Swanson\, of Swanson Stringed Instruments\, will round out the first half of the concert. Following Mark will be Don Benson accompanied by the vocals of Megan Wirts and Benson’s 11 year old granddaughter\, Cyanne\, who will be playing a ukulele that she built herself. Chester Winowiecki and the “Bearded Ladies Men” (Adrian Schuster\, Carl and Lisa Ziemelis) will entertain the audience while playing Chester’s homemade instruments including cigar box guitars and a washtub bass.  Ending the set will be Katie Springer and popular past performer\, fiddle player Isaac Smith\, both who will be performing on violins made by Elon Howe. \nThe live performance will also include a chance to meet the artists. The meet and greet reception will be from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. in the lobby of the Dogwood Center. This is your opportunity to learn about the instrument building process and view the instruments. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.\, with Black Box doors opening at 7:00 p.m. for seating. \nTo complement the concert\, an exhibit of photographs of handmade instruments made by these local luthiers is on display in the Dogwood Lobby Gallery now through February 28. The photographs include ukuleles\, mandolins\, violins\, and acoustic guitars. \nCome out and enjoy this popular concert by regional musicians performing on hand-made instruments from West Michigan luthiers. This project is for himself. He has spent the past three years developing an abstract style. The images you see are as they were shot in the camera. Although they are digital\, they have not been digitally manipulated. DESCRIPTION:Leaving a Legacy of Art: The Jansma Collection – supporting fine arts in Newaygo County\nJoin us on Saturday\, October 29 for a unique opportunity to celebrate Ray and Phyllis Jansma\, view and purchase artwork of Ray Jansma\, and help support NCCA-Artsplace! \nRay and Phyllis Jansma lived their lives surrounded by art\, music\, culture\, and friends. Their legacy is the guidance\, encouragement and support that they so willingly gave to their community. Phyllis’ passion for music and teaching will live on through all of the students she supported and mentored. Ray will be remembered not only as an architectural designer\, but as an extremely prolific artist who mastered many mediums including carving\, painting and sculpture. As a tribute to Ray and Phyllis\, their family is providing part of the proceeds from Ray’s artwork to benefit NCCA-Artsplace\, helping to continue their life-long commitment to creativity. \nFramed and unframed art\, grandfather clocks\, sculpture\, a classical guitar\, a carved “Angel” bed and more will all be available for purchase. DESCRIPTION:October 19 – November 12 – Reception\, October 20\, 5:30-7:00 p.m.\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\, 13 E. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022.\nReplogle is a full time artist and craftsman\, candle maker by trade. Over three decades he has been selling his candles at the Michigan Renaissance Fair as a means of supporting his “art habit”. During his travels back and forth from the fair\, he photographed Michigan’s rural and farm landscapes. These photographs served as inspiration for his acrylic ink paintings\, which are often very colorful and high contrast. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022.\nOlivia Timmons \nAnnie Wassmann \nLee Ann Frame \nFrom the beginning when humans would put mud\, blood or paints on their hands and make prints upon walls of caves to record their stories or to communicate an event\, printmaking has been an important tradition. We’ve come a long way from those days to engraving metal plates\, carving wood or linoleum blocks\, creating lithographs and screens to make our prints. The one thing that ties them together is the ability to make multiples\, to share an image more than once\, to put art in the hands of many. DESCRIPTION:Helen Percy Lystra\nJansma Gallery – NCCA-Artsplace\nAugust 18 through September 17\nReception\, September 9\, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\,\n13 E. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022.\nHelen Percy Lystra lives in Grand Haven\, and works full time as an artist. She paints\, makes jewelry\, does printmaking\, and likes to experiment with many different ways of making art. Her favorite subjects are old boats\, old structures and flowers. Most recently a love of fabric has worked its way into her art as well. Of her varied media she says: “My grandmother always said Jack of all trades\, master of none. I’ve changed it\, I’m a master at being a Jack of all trades.” \nLystra grew up on Union Lake in Commerce Township\, Michigan and began drawing and designing at an early age. She is a graduate of Grand Valley State University and studied at Hillsdale College and at the Art Institute of Chicago.
