DESCRIPTION:Grace Jones\, Cornerstone Christian Academy \nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\, 13 E. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022. \nThe 2017 Youth Art Exhibit was given the theme “Art Around the World” and showcases imagination and creativity! Teachers and parents of children from the Newaygo County area submitted artwork from youth Kindergarten through 6th grade. Winning selections were made and will be on display at three venues in Newaygo County: 1st\, 2nd\, 3rd place\, Honorable Mention\, and Special Recognition winners will be on display at NCCA-Artsplace. The award ceremony will be March 24 at the Dogwood Center for Performing Arts. \nIn addition all pieces of artwork selected will be photographed and projected during the Grand Rapids Symphony performance on April 12 at the Dogwood Center. SUMMARY:NCCA-Artsplace West Michigan Luthier Concert - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Tickets for this event are SOLD OUT. The NCCA-Artsplace West Michigan Luthier Concert is the ultimate combination of music and visual arts. On Saturday\, February 11\, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dogwood Center’s Black Box\, this concert will combine the beautiful artistry of local luthiers\, stringed instrument makers\, from throughout West Michigan with the talents of gifted musicians. \nThis great evening will begin with TW Felty\, Don Bremmer and Fred Kacos of Great Lakes Academy of Guitar Building. Felty and Bremmer have decades of experience building custom guitars and are now passing on their years of experience to their students. Luthier Keith Caldwell\, accompanied by Gene Calkins\, Ian Tronsen and Jerry Roberts\, will be performing with Caldwell’s handmade instruments. Mark Swanson\, of Swanson Stringed Instruments\, will round out the first half of the concert. Following Mark will be Don Benson accompanied by the vocals of Megan Wirts and Benson’s 11 year old granddaughter\, Cyanne\, who will be playing a ukulele that she built herself. Chester Winowiecki and the “Bearded Ladies Men” (Adrian Schuster\, Carl and Lisa Ziemelis) will entertain the audience while playing Chester’s homemade instruments including cigar box guitars and a washtub bass.  Ending the set will be Katie Springer and popular past performer\, fiddle player Isaac Smith\, both who will be performing on violins made by Elon Howe. \nThe live performance will also include a chance to meet the artists. The meet and greet reception will be from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. in the lobby of the Dogwood Center. This is your opportunity to learn about the instrument building process and view the instruments. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.\, with Black Box doors opening at 7:00 p.m. for seating. \nTo complement the concert\, an exhibit of photographs of handmade instruments made by these local luthiers is on display in the Dogwood Lobby Gallery now through February 28. The photographs include ukuleles\, mandolins\, violins\, and acoustic guitars. \nCome out and enjoy this popular concert by regional musicians performing on hand-made instruments from West Michigan luthiers. DESCRIPTION:Leaving a Legacy of Art: The Jansma Collection – supporting fine arts in Newaygo County\nJoin us on Saturday\, October 29 for a unique opportunity to celebrate Ray and Phyllis Jansma\, view and purchase artwork of Ray Jansma\, and help support NCCA-Artsplace! \nRay and Phyllis Jansma lived their lives surrounded by art\, music\, culture\, and friends. Their legacy is the guidance\, encouragement and support that they so willingly gave to their community. Phyllis’ passion for music and teaching will live on through all of the students she supported and mentored. Ray will be remembered not only as an architectural designer\, but as an extremely prolific artist who mastered many mediums including carving\, painting and sculpture. As a tribute to Ray and Phyllis\, their family is providing part of the proceeds from Ray’s artwork to benefit NCCA-Artsplace\, helping to continue their life-long commitment to creativity. \nFramed and unframed art\, grandfather clocks\, sculpture\, a classical guitar\, a carved “Angel” bed and more will all be available for purchase. DESCRIPTION:October 19 – November 12 – Reception\, October 20\, 5:30-7:00 p.m.\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\, 13 E. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022.\nReplogle is a full time artist and craftsman\, candle maker by trade. Over three decades he has been selling his candles at the Michigan Renaissance Fair as a means of supporting his “art habit”. During his travels back and forth from the fair\, he photographed Michigan’s rural and farm landscapes. These photographs served as inspiration for his acrylic ink paintings\, which are often very colorful and high contrast. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022.\nOlivia Timmons \nAnnie Wassmann \nLee Ann Frame \nFrom the beginning when humans would put mud\, blood or paints on their hands and make prints upon walls of caves to record their stories or to communicate an event\, printmaking has been an important tradition. We’ve come a long way from those days to engraving metal plates\, carving wood or linoleum blocks\, creating lithographs and screens to make our prints. The one thing that ties them together is the ability to make multiples\, to share an image more than once\, to put art in the hands of many. DESCRIPTION:Helen Percy Lystra\nJansma Gallery – NCCA-Artsplace\nAugust 18 through September 17\nReception\, September 9\, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\,\n13 E. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022.\nHelen Percy Lystra lives in Grand Haven\, and works full time as an artist. She paints\, makes jewelry\, does printmaking\, and likes to experiment with many different ways of making art. Her favorite subjects are old boats\, old structures and flowers. Most recently a love of fabric has worked its way into her art as well. Of her varied media she says: “My grandmother always said Jack of all trades\, master of none. I’ve changed it\, I’m a master at being a Jack of all trades.” \nLystra grew up on Union Lake in Commerce Township\, Michigan and began drawing and designing at an early age. She is a graduate of Grand Valley State University and studied at Hillsdale College and at the Art Institute of Chicago. DESCRIPTION:Looking for artisans who tie\, carve\, paint\, etc. decoys\, mounts\, flies\, lures\, make nets\, rods\, anything related to fishing. Also instructors/speakers. The main goal of this exhibition is to spotlight all of the different traditional craft\, modern technique and also fine art related to the sport of fishing and also promote good stewardship and conservation of Michigan fisheries and natural resources. \nThe exhibit will be on display at NCCA-Artsplace\, 13 E. Main\, Fremont\, July 13 through August 15. I’m also looking for artists/photographers who use fish and their environments as their subject in painting\, drawing and photography. I would need all work turned in to NCCA-Artsplace by July 8. DESCRIPTION:Paintings by Mary Ann Southworth\nJune 8 through July 9\nReception Friday June 24 – 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\,\n13 E. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022. \nMary Ann was born in rural Michigan and raised on a cash crop farm. Her family grew navy beans\, wheat\, corn\, oats and alfalfa. Mary Ann enjoyed farm life. She liked to be outside riding her horse\, doing chores or working in the fields. Winter days were often spent in the farm shop. Her father\, a gifted builder\, taught Mary Ann how to weld and work with wood. He would often take a piece of chalk and draw out plans on the cement floor. This is where Mary Ann’s love for making things began. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After graduating from college Mary Ann made her way back to the farm where she grew up. She lives there now with her husband\, son\, two horses\, one dog and many cats. \nHer recent work is inspired by her mothers love for nature\, stones in particular; and artist George Innes. “My mom liked to collect stones. She found them in the fields or in her flower beds. After washing them\, depending on their size and color\, she would display them on tabletops an windowsills. As she got older and less sure on her feet I would bring her stones that I had found. When I think about it now I see that the stones changed as they passed through her hands. They mean several things to me now: warmth\, an exchange\, a connection between two people\, a selection of one out of many\, a gift given and received.” These emotional connections seem to be reflected in many of her paintings. “Recently\, I saw an Inness landscape at the GRAM. I was deeply moved by the power the painting had to stir such strong emotions in me. Was it that I was looking at a tree or was I looking at how Inness felt when he saw the tree? I think this is what I find so exciting about painting. I don’t have to describe in words what I can express through an image. DESCRIPTION:Nature’s Beauty – The Art of Woodturning\nMarch 25 – April 30\nReception and Demonstration\nSaturday\, April 23 – 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.\nThe humble beginnings of woodturning dates to around 1300 BC when the Egyptians first developed a two-person lathe. One person would turn the wood with a rope while the other used a sharp tool to cut shapes in the wood. Times\, techniques\, materials and equipment have changed dramatically. While some find a unique interest in staying pure to older techniques\, modern woodturners now use powerful electric lathes\, a wide range of carving tools and gouges\, joinery\, fillers and stains\, while some others prefer to complete their works au natural. Woodworkers can use single point face plate turning\, dual point spindle turning or both on a single piece of wood. \nThis exhibit shows us the natural beauty of wood turned to perfection by several area wood turners as well as members from the Grand River Woodturners Guild and Michigan Association of Woodturners. Our everyday world where we mow our grass\, tend to our cars and go to work. The other world is the world of things we leave behind. Cars and trucks in the field. A barn silo or an old farm house. Signs for businesses that don’t exist anymore. In extreme cases like Detroit\, whole buildings are left to be ravaged by time\, nature and man. Once housing schools\, churches and factories that were a mainstay of the American economy and symbols of our culture\, they now sit empty. Their roofs sag. Their floors are upheaved. Their walls have been covered in graffiti. Yet as those once proud monuments sit waiting for demolition\, or rebirth\, one can find beauty amongst the chaos. These images are at once sad\, nostalgic and hauntingly beautiful. \nRichard Hinton is a photographer from the Fremont area. His active involvement in area photo clubs\, efforts in organizing photographic adventures among peers\, participation in various photography competitions and volunteer time with NCCA-Artsplace show just how important the arts\, specifically photography\, are to him. Samantha Luotonen is a freelance illustrator specializing in colored pencil drawings of the natural world. She is very interested in nature’s beauty and simplicity. Highlighting that beauty is the focus of all of her work. Sam’s technical skill at layering\, blending\, burnishing\, and use of color with Prismacolor pencils is outstanding. The detail in these intricate drawings almost make the viewer believe we could smell\, taste or feel the subject dripping off the page. Worth a visit in person just to see for yourself the photorealistic quality of these drawings. \nOriginally from the East side of the state\, Samantha now lives and works in Grand Rapids\, where she received her BFA in Illustration from Kendall College of Art and Design. DESCRIPTION:July 22 – August 29 – Gail Howarth and Renae Wallace\nOf Time\, Transition\, and Reflection \nReception Friday\, August 21\, 5:30-7:00 p.m.\nOf Time\, Transition and Reflection is a collaborative work between photographer Gail Howarth and painter/illustrator\, Renae Wallace. Gail wandered the back roads of Newaygo County capturing images through her lens that told the story of change\, of time moving on\, of the cycles of life\, death\, rebirth\, and the transition between all of these beautiful and powerful moments in life. Images may be haunting\, with nature “reclaiming” an object back into the growth. Many images are nostalgic of a time gone past\, or show their importance in capturing that moment of change; that moment where life and time transitions into the next phase. Renae was able to wander through Gail’s photographs and choose the images that spoke to her as a painter and inspired her to interpret the meaning through a brush and alter the perspective and focus of the lens. Main St.\, Fremont. 231-924-4022.\nStephanie Schlatter is an American landscape painter whose work is deeply connected to and rooted in her native Michigan. She’s best known for her On the Michigan Wine Trail series\, which explores the stories of the state’s vineyards and wineries through paint. Her artwork has appeared on several Michigan wine labels and is available in wineries and tasting rooms across the state. Much of her work also incorporates the scenic lakes on which she spent her childhood. \n\nJune 17 – July 18 – Kristi Visser – 100 Portraits\nReception July 16\, 5:30-7:00 p.m.\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\, 13 E. Main St.\, Fremont. 231-924-4022.\nKristi set out to do 100 small faces as an act of daily practice during a season in her life that allowed very little time or space for making art.  What started out as a discipline turned into her passion.  She hopes that you will take the time to meet each face she created and experience a connection while asking yourself as you look into their eyes:  What are they feeling? What do they see? What do they long for? Who do they remember? SUMMARY:2015 Statewide Photography Competition Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Now through June 13\nNCCA Statewide Photography Competition\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\, 13 E. Main St.\, Fremont. 231-924-4022. Our goal is to exhibit and acknowledge the finest photographers in the State of Michigan and encourage greater growth and achievement in the photographic community. This is a juried competition. Selected works are on exhibit and among them will be the honor of 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place and honorable mentions receiving ribbons and cash awards. \n2015 Juror Brian Kainulainen is a professional landscape photographer. Although photography is his primary medium\, Kainulainen has also received a Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting and Graphic Design and worked several years as a Graphic Artist\, which has added a certain artistic quality to his work. \n  \nJuror’s Statement:\n“Jurying this show was an honor and a pleasure…and slightly nerve-racking. It’s  always nice to see how other photographers view the world and the different processes they choose to communicate their vision. There was a nice range of work submitted and I was impressed with the quality of work achieved. This did not make the already unpleasant task of eliminating certain works any easier. And it added an extra challenge in choosing the awards.\nI believe great photography is technically sound\, visually compelling\,  and moves us in some way. As I looked at each work I asked myself several questions: Is the composition strong/compelling? What is the quality of the light and how did the photographer use it? Does the work have visual or emotional impact? What is the image about or is the photographer’s intent with the image clear? And what is the quality of the overall presentation of the image (framing\, matting\, wrapping)?\nI believe the chosen works succeeded in several  of these areas and the awarded works had all of these elements going for them. These works were the ones that really stood out to me because of their technical excellence\, their beautiful marriage of form and content\, and their overall impact.\nI enjoyed the jury process\, though it was not easy\, and I tried to be fair in my choices to present a high quality\, diverse show. I want to congratulate those photographers that were admitted into the show and received awards. I want to encourage those who were not accepted to continue to believe in their work. The jury process can be unkind\, but I am just one man and can guarantee that I am not all-knowing. As artists I believe subjecting our work to scrutiny by others can be painful\, but can\, also\, be very rewarding and help us grow into better image makers in the end.”\n-Brian Kainulainen\n  \nPhotographers receiving honors are: \n1st place\, Jim Churchill for “Autumn Splendor”\n2nd place\, Donald Leigh Karel for “The Gathering”\n3rd place\, Frederic A. Main St.\, Fremont\,\n231-924-4022.\nBlacksmithing has been a profession since man discovered iron and needed people to manipulate it into useful items for the times such as weapons\, household goods\, tools and decorations. The Industrial Revolution (the age of machines) saw an end of the era when every community had a blacksmith. We don’t realize often how many treasures we have in our own back yard\, but Mrs. Splitstone is undoubtedly a qualified expert when it comes to quilting\, the history of quilting and quilt collections. She’s been featured in quilt shows too numerous to mention\, has juried many competitions\, held workshops\, lead groups and has inspired quite literally\, generations of quilters. \nMillie’s collection of quilt blocks\, those fundamental\, traditional\, sometimes experimental squares that when pieced together\, make up a beloved quilt\, numbers over 800. This awe inspiring display of over 600 of Millie’s quilt blocks will walk you through the tradition carried down by each generation\, the history of the time when the block was created\, or the fabric recycled\, and will inevitably touch you with the passion this woman has for her art. Her talent and excitement in learning about art lead to her teaching it for over two decades. Now retired she spends her time traveling with a camera\, capturing moments that have become the source of new work. Sharon’s bold and colorful\, often playful depictions of the natural landscape\, flora and fauna\, beloved pets and favorite wildlife show her whimsical and energized view of the world through her oil\, watercolor and acrylic paintings. \nSharon’s scientific approach to her work makes color imagery come alive and initiates discovery and fascination. “In my work\, every mark\, no matter how small\, makes a difference to the final vision. I strive for the complexity of images. I love large formats and brilliant color.
