SUMMARY:Stacy Niedzwiecki: Photography
DESCRIPTION:NCCA-Artsplace Corridor Gallery: \nStacy first exhibited her photographic work in the 2009 NCCA-Artsplace Statewide Photography Competition! We’re proud to see how far she has come! Niedzwiecki’s photos have a variety of style\, subject matter\, and location. \nStacy has been involved in digital photography for approximately 16 years\, but her art and graphic design career has traversed nearly three decades. Her fascination with nature’s beauty eventually found its way through the camera lens\, netting awards in multiple regional\, national and international competitions. While she is particularly drawn to the beauty found within our own state of Michigan\, the body of work also includes scenes from her travels in Ohio\, Wisconsin\, Colorado\, Minnesota and California. \nDevoted to her art\, Niedzwiecki is a member of the North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA)\, the Rogue River Artists Association\, and has participated in several artist residency programs sponsored by the Glen Arbor Art Association\, as well as the Crosshatch Center for Art & Ecology’s Hill House in Bellaire\, Michigan. Niedzwiecki actively supplies imagery for many Michigan-based CVBs\, the Rockford Economic Development Corporation\, Rockford Chamber of Commerce\, and the Shoreline Visitors’ Guide. \nHer most honored accomplishment is the installation of 63 of her nature images at the permanent art collection in the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion\, which opened in 2008 in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. SUMMARY:Paintings by Charles Allen LaRue: Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Paintings by Charles Allen LaRue\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\, 13 E. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022.\nCharles is a Michigan native and it is from the Great Lakes State that he derives much of his inspiration for his colorful interpretations of the structures and organic forms that he depicts. \nHe had drawn pictures since he was old enough to grasp a pencil in his fist\, and sought a way of doing something with his love of picture- making. So upon high school graduation he moved from South Haven to Grand Rapids to attend the Kendall College of Art and Design\, graduating with an Illustration major. Charles freelanced and did in-house work as an illustrator. \nCharles had three pivotal experiences that collectively catapulted him into going headlong into pure Fine Arts painting. He spent a summer in France where he studied informally and steeped himself in the paintings and scenery of what he had previously known only through reproductions in art books. He began seeing light and colors more robustly in everything. When Charles returned to Grand Rapids with a new vision and essentially truly beheld GR’s Heritage Hill area for the first time he saw the neighborhood as a shapescape\, with clustered architectonic geometries\, as he had been sensitized to in Paris. The colors flooded in for him that had been pale in comparison to his older work. \nLater\, Charles moved from purely geometrized patterns all coalescing\, into paintings that allowed more atmosphere and fluid\, organic elements. But he still paints in the manner of a craftsman; feeling as though he is assembling discrete units of colored materials into a gestalt image. This exhibit is a collection of works by Ray Jansma\, Gail Johnston\, Mike McDonnell and Janine Hogancamp Scholars and artists inspired by the Tuesdays at Ray’s life drawing studio; curated to show us what a lasting impression looks like. \nStyling by Joel Curtis \nSome of the artists include: Sharon Smithem\, Isobel Karnes\, Steve Replogle\, Lindsay Isenhart\, Lance Moon\, Lara Cummings\, Scott McKowen\, Jack Smith\, Mike McDonnell\, Jaime Pell\, Joel Curtis\, Kaitlyn Knuver\, Rachel Eager\, Pat Miller\, Cara O’Brien\, Autumn Aslakson\, Erin Sweers\, Dale R. Johnson\, Gail Johnston\, Allison Kublin\, and others. \nPottery by Autumn Aslakson \nAlong with his family\, Ray Jansma contributed of his time and talents to our community in immeasurable ways. He was a gifted painter\, sculptor\, wood worker\, boat builder\, potter\, photographer and by trade a talented architectural designer. While designing over 300 architectural jobs in 30 years as a design agency of one\, Ray and Phyllis raised four children\, and Ray created thousands of original works of fine art. Ray’s studio\, located just behind their Ramshorn home\, was always open. The subject matter spans four continents and both hemispheres\, and his painting in the Historical and Western genres are collected nationally and internationally. \nMichaels has exhibited at the Royal Watercolor Society in London and has been a regular exhibitor in the Artists of America\, the Great American Artists and the “Quest for the West” exhibition at the Eiteljorg Museum. DESCRIPTION:March 23 – April 27\nHot Wax: The Art of Batik and Pysanky\nArtwork by Lara Cummings and Dena DeKryger\nDemonstration Thursday\, April 25\, 5:30-7:00\nJansma Gallery at NCCA-Artsplace\, 13 E. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022. \nThe use of wax in fine art has thousands of years of history in art forms such as batik and pysanky. This exhibit features two local artists\, Lara Cummings’ Pysanky egg design and Dena DeKryger’s batik paintings. \nLara Cummings is a former Jansma Scholarship recipient and has explored many fine art mediums. Her love of Pysanky eggs comes from a family heritage tradition that she decided to explore and excel at. Pysanka is a Ukrainian Easter egg\, decorated with traditional Ukrainian folk designs using a wax-resist method. \nDena DeKryger states “For me\, the art of batik encompasses boldness\, serendipity\, individuality\, and memory. Each decision that goes into making a batik must be bold because that decision cannot be reversed or amended. Once the wax hits the muslin\, the color of the fabric beneath the wax is defined.” \nOn Thursday\, April 25\, enjoy free demonstrations in Batik by Kris Vredeveld\, and Pysanky by Lindsay Isenhart. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - West Michigan Luthier Concert
DESCRIPTION:NCCA-Artsplace and Dogwood Center for the Performing Arts present the West Michigan Luthier Concert\, an event that is the ultimate combination of music and visual arts. On Saturday\, February 9\, at 7:30 p.m.\, the concert will combine the beautiful artistry of local luthiers\, stringed instrument makers\, from throughout West Michigan with the talents of gifted musicians. \nThis great evening will begin with Catlin Hill and Soul Vine (Jennifer Schofield\, Tallulah Lancaster\, and Brooke Fletcher) performing with violins made by Elon Howe. Luthier Keith Caldwell\, accompanied by Jerry Roberts\, Jack Schipper\, and Michelle Emmorey\, will be performing with Caldwell’s handmade instruments. Luthier and Dobro expert\, Tim Scheerhorn will be performing for the first time in the West Michigan Luthier Concert with one of his Resonator guitars. Following Tim will be luthier Don Benson accompanied by his granddaughters\, Cyanne and Cora\, who are both learning the art of lutherie. Sue Anderson will begin the second half of the concert performing with one of the late Robert Sayers guitars. Luthier Jim Spalink will again be performing with his beautiful harps. The evening will wrap up with Ralston Bowles\, performing with a guitar made by luthier Bryan Galloup. \nThe live performance will also include a chance to meet the artists. A meet and greet reception will be from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. in the lobby of the Dogwood Center. This is an opportunity to learn about the instrument building process and view the instruments. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.\, in the Dogwood Center Black Box with doors opening at 7:00 p.m. for seating. \nTo complement the concert\, an exhibit of photographs of handmade instruments made by West Michigan luthiers will be on display in the Dogwood Lobby Gallery from January 22 through February 23. The photographs include ukuleles\, violins\, violas\, banjos and acoustic guitars. \nCome out and enjoy this popular concert by regional musicians performing on hand-made instruments from West Michigan luthiers. \nSOLD OUT $12.50. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022. \nThis exhibit features a series of photographs by Malia Rae\, printed on metal\, with all containing the motif of a heart found in nature. \nArtist Statement: It began with the concept “What you look for in life you find.” I went to Mother Nature to soothe my soul. She responded with an abundance of Love – manifesting in the symbolic shape of a heart. With camera as my witness\, I have been documenting the evidence of my many findings on this journey. Mother Nature has given me the greatest gifts I never would have thought to ask for. With these hearts She has taught me about transformation; turning betrayal into trust\, heartbreak into love\, confusion into clarity\, and pain into purpose. Maybe this is true alchemy? I am beginning to think the universal elixir is love\, and love is gold. \nI continue to return to nature as a ritual of remembering to return to Love. This has become a practice of exploration and discovery\, awakening to a new landscape of possibility. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022. \nA bold and textural exhibit of fiber based artwork by contemporary artists Lois Carpenter\, Sandy Dekker\, Nancy Reagh Johnson and Olivia Johnson will be featured this Fall. \nSandy Dekker has been making quilted paintings and mixed media fiber pieces in the Fremont area for several years. \nLois Carpenter is a fiber artist working in wet felting\, her art is inspired by nature’s colors and textures. Dividing her time between Michigan and Arizona gives her a diverse range of nature to absorb and translate into her art. \nNancy Reagh Johnson is an art quilt and spirit doll maker from the Muskegon area. She states\, “I love fabric. I love the colors\, the textures and putting different combinations together.” \nOlivia Johnson is an artist from the Hart area working in needle felted wool. She creates 3D whimsical gnomes and critters along with bees\, songbirds and seasonal ornaments. Main St.\, Fremont\, 231-924-4022. \nDale Johnson has a fine art education\, and Professor Emeritus after teaching painting and drawing for 42 years at Bethel University in St. Paul\, Minnesota. \n“This exhibition is in part a completion of a dream\, an item on my bucket list. I have fished and painted my way through this life. I am showing a series of paintings\, drawings and monotype prints along the themes of shanty fishing and rural life\,” states Johnson. \n“In both Minnesota and Michigan people go out to winter fish in hand built shanties. They are portable and could move from spot to best spot on a lake or river. I have fished and painted this way. In the warm shanty small color studies can be started and then often finished in my studio where sometimes they are developed into larger canvases.
