NCCA-Artsplace Exhibit: Jana Hanka – Wood Fired Clay

Jana earned her MFA from the Prague Academy of Fine Arts in 1980 and has been living in the USA since 1987. She has participated in several hundred shows in the intervening years – 60 of them as featured artist.
Jana began life as a painter and has slowly evolved into a sculptor, employing clay and bronze. Her currently displayed work is mostly ceramic sculpture.
“I have grown particularly fond of the rough and unpredictable earthy effects created by ash deposits and microclimates within the large fire-breathing dragon of a kiln we use for week-long Anagama Japanese-style wood-firings. It is a force unto itself, beautiful and primal and the work that comes from the kiln is a reflection of that ancient process,” states Jana. “I died falling from a horse and woke up in a hospital a month later – and suddenly nothing is as it seems – ever again. My life and artwork were changed completely. All bets were off and my life became that of a seeker after truth and visions of the numinous and intangible. That’s what my works ultimately represent – me becoming something deeper in relationship and developing alongside the other – the non-human. Man and horse – a relationship that is ancient, beautiful, dangerous and ultimately enlightening.”

During the artist reception on September 29, 6:00 p.m. Jana will perform a short piece of modern dance she has choreographed to collaborate with the exhibit called Seven Days.  It is about the dramatic process of that happens during the firing of the kiln.

Last Garden Dress by Amy Wilkinson

An energetic synergy is released when Lisa Medendorp’s abstract paintings and the surrealistic sculptures of Amy Wilkinson get together. The dancing, twisting painted forms on canvas create a fitting surround to the restrained tension held in sculptural suspension.

The totemic, somewhat figurative forms in Medendorp’s paintings evoke mythological styles, The Lake Marcher’s series can be interpreted as being mythological defenders of the environment who march across Lake Michigan with the ever changing weather fronts.

Wilkinson utilizes wrapped wire and other fibers to create an eclectic weaving of reclaimed materials. Her themes involve strength, beauty, and perseverance lightly veiled in nostalgia, and encourage frugality when considering our resource allocations.

The two artists share a respect for the environment that is evident by the re-purposing of discarded materials in Wilkinson’s rustic assemblages that are in harmony with the themes that underlie Medendorp’s paintings. The use of interwoven shapes and materials in the works by both artists echo the interconnected web of nature.

Young at Art Class Fee $10.00 Ages 4-5
Three Sessions: June 26-29 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
July 17-20 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
August 14-17 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
It’s never too early to encourage an interest in art. During this class, beginning students will learn to use a variety of materials to explore drawing, painting, cutting, gluing and clay in a creative, nurturing environment.

Amazing Africa Class Fee $12.00 Ages 6-8
Two Sessions: June 26-29 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
July 31-August 3 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Pack your passport and bags for a journey to West Africa! Your tour guide, Amy Knuver, back from a year living in Togo, Africa, will teach you about this amazing continent while you create masks, clay sculptures, prints and more.

Summertime Fun Class Fee $12.00 Ages 6-8
Two Sessions: July 10-13 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
August 14-17 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Capture the fun times of summer in colorful works of art. Students will learn to use paint, papers, clay and a variety of other materials to create a camping landscape, melting ice cream cones, bug tiles and a picnic lunch through art.

Students will learn about portraits, landscapes, still life, sculpture and explore using a variety of materials in unexpected ways.

What is that rustling in the leaves? Students will use animals as their inspiration for each project. Painting, drawing, sculpture, clay and printmaking will be explored.

Build it! Learning About Architecture
Class Fee $15 Ages 9-12
Two Sessions: July 10-13 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
August 7-10 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Architecture surrounds you! Students will use clay, printmaking, cardboard and paint to design interesting buildings. Learn about columns, onion shaped domes, dentils, fish scale shingles and more as you become a budding architect.

Sculpture: A Journey to the Third Dimension
Class Fee $15.00 Ages 9-12
Two Sessions: July 24-27 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
August 7-10 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Take a break from the flat world of two dimensional art and enter the world of FORM. Using metal, cardboard, paint and paper mache we will create amazing pieces of art!

Art is Delicious! Class Fee $15.00 Ages 9-12

July 24-27 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.
Using food as an inspiration we will explore clay, papers, collage, mixed media and drawing to design art pieces that will look good enough to eat while learning about some well known artists that became famous for their giant hamburgers and soup cans. This is a recipe for some amazing art.

African Safari Class Fee $15.00 Ages 9-12
Two Sessions: June 26 – 29 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
July 31 – August 3 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.

If you love to draw, this is the class for you! Sharpen your skills and learn some new techniques while working in a variety of mediums including graphite, charcoal, ink and pastel. Discover the tricks of perspective, how to capture light and shadow, make contour line drawings and how to add texture to your drawings.

Claytastic Class Fee $15.00 Ages 10-18

Get muddy at NCCA-Artsplace! This class is limited to 6 participants per session so each participant will get some experience throwing on the potter’s wheel! Students will also learn how to hand build, connect, and roll a slab! Learn several different finishing techniques including glazing, staining and painting. All work goes home the final day of class.

Learn to bring new life to those old books! We have plenty on hand to sculpt into paper roses and daffodils, and create a kinetic sculpture paper crane mobile! Students will learn the art or paper folding, origami, and the value of recycling!

OBrien, Image 5, Extending, 17x12x5, Porcelain, wood, and waxIn Between Here and Gone creates a powerful visual editorial on the beauty found in all cycles of nature.
Cara O’Brien’s recent sculptural work is strongly influenced by organic forms produced through the growth, erosions and decay of the natural world, while Diane’s stunning visual documentation of that same cycle through photography.

Whitehall resident. Cara is a full time artist producing sculpture primarily in porcelain, wood and metal.

Zoellmer, Image 2, Ice CurtainDiane Zoellmer lives in Whitehall and is exploring her passion for
photography after retiring as an educator in the technology field.
The photos in this exhibit all address natural formations, created from the sand,wind,water,and sun along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
