INSPIRE – Classes for Teens – February 1 – Breaking Down the Human Face

Thursdays 3:45-5:15 p.m. Ages 12-18. Class Fee $10

These classes are funded in part by grants from
the FACF Youth Advisory Committee and Michigan Council for
Arts and Cultural Affairs Minigrant Program.
These exciting and exploratory art classes are designed
to give middle and high school students a chance to
learn about art styles and mediums they may not get in a
classroom. All materials provided. January 11 & 18 Glass
Mosaic requires students attend both days.
January 11 & 18 – Glass Mosaic Treasure Box
Using stained glass on tile, students will create a unique
box top mosaic. We’ll take a look at the Italian masters,
and learn to cut, piece and grout glass designs. Day one is
cutting and applying glass; day two is all about grouting.
February 1 – Breaking Down the Human Face
This crash course drawing workshop involves learning to
sketch correct proportions, find the visual planes, shade
and detail all the elements of the human head.
February 15 – Art in Ink
Explore the many ways to use ink…from India Ink,
to vibrant colored inks, to home made walnut inks to
illustrate, draw, or paint a work of art.
March 1 – Japanese Kawaii Polymer Clay Charms
Kawaii: “lovable”, “cute”, or “adorable” – is the quality of
cuteness in the context of Japanese culture. Use polymer
clay sculpting techniques to create Kawaii Neko cats, or
similar figures/pendants in this fun sculpture class.
March 15 – Basketry Knots/Cane Wrapped Rocks
Many cultures use the art of knot tying and basketry to
create functional art forms or to adorn items. Students
will each weave a basketry knot pattern using cane
around a smoothed Michigan stone.

Zentangle® Inspired Art: Renaissance Gold Class with Georgianna Klein

Saturday 12:30-3:00 p.m.

July 8

Class Fee: $35 ($30 Members)

Ages 14-Adult

Prerequisite: Basics Class

Adding gold foil to your Zentangle Inspired Art can really make it pop. You will add gold to a Renaissance tan Zendala (round) and finish it, using both familiar and new tangle patterns and colored pencil shading. In addition, you will add gold to other tiles to be tangled at home. Bring your Basics Kit bag. Other materials will be supplied.

Zentangle® Basics with Georgianna Klein

Saturday 9:00-11:30 a.m.

July 8

Class Fee: $35 ($30 Members)

Ages 14-Adult

Zentangle is a fun, easy-to-learn, relaxing method of creating beautiful images using repetitive patterns. No drawing experience or special skills are necessary except an open heart and the ability to hold a pen. In this class you will create several ink drawings on small paper tiles.

Colored Pencil Workshop Solomon’s Seal Wildflower with Anita Sams

Saturday 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Ages 14-Adult

Capture the beauty of this delicate spring perennial using colored pencils. Anita will skillfully guide you through the variety of pencil techniques such as blending, layering, and burnishing to create a realistic rendition of this interesting plant. All materials are provided. Stop in at the NCCA-Artsplace to see Anita’s work. Bring a lunch.

Young Artists’ Toolbox Drawing Workshop with Lindsay Isenhart

Saturday 12:30-2:00 p.m.

April 22

Class Fee: $25 ($20 Members)

Ages 8-18

Learn about Lindsay’s “Artist’s Toolbox” of drawing skills and materials. From learning how to check proportion and perspective, to using drawing tools in a variety of different ways, students will gain new useful drawing skills to take into their future practice. Pencil, charcoal and water media will be used. Class includes sketchbook, pencil and eraser.

Life Drawing with Lindsay Isenhart

Monday 6:30-8:30 p.m.

May 2, 9, 16, 23

$75 ($65 Members)

Ages 16-Adult

Starting with gesture, and proportion, following through to some anatomical landmarks and finding the planes of the face, we will draw from observation and enjoy the practice of drawing the figure from life. Time to knock off the rust and get drawing again if you’ve been in artistic hibernation, or if you’re new to figure drawing, this is the perfect time to jump in! We will be focusing on a variety of drawing mediums. All materials provided. Class includes large newsprint pad and drawing paper pad for each student.

There are many different drawing techniques such as capturing light and shadow using a light source, using contour line drawing and adding texture. This is a perfect opportunity to improve your drawing skills using a variety of materials.
